Thank God, I don't know what the House was thinking in passing that bill.

    Re: Senate rejects smoking ban

Living in a state where its illegal to smoke indoors, I think you all will LOVE it once it gets passed. Smokers still went out to bars and restaurants and smokers still smoked - only outside. For us non-smokers the difference was like night and day. Instead of waking wit a hangover AND a sore throat and stinky clothes, you only had to deal with 1 drinking hassle.

    Re: Senate rejects smoking ban

Nebraska chose to reject a watered down compromise bill last year that was advocated by the tobacco lobby. The process pushed the issue to the forefront enough that the more of the public came forward this year to contact their representatives about their wishes. The result was a extensive ban passed this year to go into effect on 6/09. It's simply a matter of time until representatives realize that they serve the public and not just the few making the most noise.

    Re: Senate rejects smoking ban

While I am on the opposite side of why they didn't pass it today, I am glad they rejected it.

I really hope "politics in action" continues to delay or remove the chance of a ban.

It is comical how the two legislature bodies are 'bickering' over the amendments and special interests (casinos and VA) clogging this up. Anyone else find it comical?

    Re: Senate rejects smoking ban

The senate did the right thing. Now this will go to committee and hopefully a decent compromise can be worked out.

You're very right keepngoal---it's comical, and even sad, how the bickering and special interest groups can have such an effect on this bill or any bill that is supposed to be for the health of the people of Iowa.

    Re: Senate rejects smoking ban

I'm pretty suprised that a kid in his mid 20's that pushed the Generation Iowa comission to retain young Iowans was the sponsor of the amendment that took the teeth out of this bill-Bailey from north central Iowa. He either has a tough re-election or is very indebted to a casino and/or the Iowa Restaurant Association for his election last year

Rep. Bailey is from my district (Webster City). I don't believe he is in bed with either... BUT... he is a HUGE follower of the DNC. I would suspect he was asked to add the amendments by upper management.

Or, I can see him getting local grief for the one, the only restruant/bar in town and bending over from that.

We better ban chimneys, grills, burning garbage, etc. to comply with that.

I've gotta believe it's more of a local concern for Bailey. If the DNC were pushing it I doubt Chet and so many other liberals would be in favor of it.
