    The official keep McCarney thread

I for one hope that ISU keeps Mac for a minimum of one more year, if not more. He has easily earned at least that much. But it seems like there is a lot of fans out there who do not, so I'm just trying to get a sense of how many really do want him out, and how many would like to keep him. Also, to clarify, I voted for the first, but I'm assuming that if Coach feels like an assistant has to go, that would be his choic.

Re: The official keep McCarney thread

I was talking about it with some friends today, and we all came to the conclusion that Cotton has to go. The past three years have had Meyer running all around the field with no OL. If a Senior-laden o-line can't do the job, then something's wrong.

Put me in the wait until the end of next season crowd. He has earned the opportunity to see the Meyer/Blythe class through. He needs to be able to "take the next step" next season with Iowa, Texas, and OU at home.

Agreed. I remember when he was hired being so excited about our line's potential with him at the helm. Needless to say, I'm disappointed with the present situation. I wonder what the problem is... Is it that the guys he's coaching aren't the kind of linemen he wants to coach? Is his approach to coaching not being received by the players? Are his coordinator reponsibilities taking time away from his work with the linemen? All I know is the o-line and offensive output are pathetic and he's in charge of both. Coincidence? I think not...

No kidding. If Dan's ever going to pull off his "big win", it needs to be next year. Senior All-American candidates at QB and WR, a defense with a year of experience, and offensive line that, frankly, can't be much worse than this year. I don't know if Mac should be canned, but I do know that it's doubtful that Jamie will fire him after this year from what I've been hearing him say. I'd say that if we don't have a Big XII North title by the end of the 2009 season (three seasons, two against the "powder-puff" South rotation), Jamie will pull the trigger. I'm not advocating that we wait that long, that's my prediction of what will happen. Naturally, if we get wiped next season, it probably will happen next year.

    Dear Jamie,

    Fire Barney.

    Sincerely,
    Your Cyclone Family

This is the week things come together. I feel it.

Of course, I have seen absolutely nothing that this will happen, it's just a gut feeling.

Re: The official keep McCarney thread

So far it's at about 70% overall to keep McCarney, which I see as a really good thing, though the odds may be skewed by the name of the thread. Oh well, I sure hope we do.

I really like that when you view the poll it shows who voted how. Just seems to take away some annonimity. Well as much as you can on a message board.

Re: The official keep McCarney thread

I'm really shocked at how few people are ready to get rid of McCarney. A couple thoughts . . .

    - He has not EARNED the right to have more years. He has had 12. He ruined two opportunities to play in the Big XII title game that aren't likely to come around again anytime soon. He makes a ton of money. We are not indebted to him at all.

    - You can create a mountain of facts that support firing him, but I have yet to see any fact or logic-based support for keeping him around. Forgiving his record from pre-2000, which is a reasonable thing to do, he still has been below average since then. There is no sidestepping this fact. He has had his time to prove he is a good coach, and has shown to be below average for the Big XII.

    - The fact that we will have Meyer (and hopefully Blythe) back next year, along with some promising young defenders is a reason to get rid of him. A good coach may be able to win right away with what we have to play with. McCarney has shown he is not able to win with what we have.

Well look at it this way...
    1) The thread is "keep McCarney thread" (thus catching the attention of Mac supporters. People, even on the net, tend to gravitate to those with like opinions (go back and look at previous keep or fire Mac threads)

    2) 2 of the options are set up to keep him the third is FIRE HIM so it makes it seem like a drastic action (see validity/size of the sample etc.)

THAT being said...you have to keep him until the end of the year (really don't want to get into that) and who knows he might pull it out!

Re: The official keep McCarney thread

Why not start another poll that has these choices.

    1. Release Mac of his duties right now.
    2. Release Mac of his duties at year end.
    3. Release Mac of his duties if we start 0-3 next year in Big 12.
    4. Release Mac of his duties if he doesn't change assistances right now.
    5. Release Mac of his duties if he doesn't change assistance at year end.
    6. Release Mac of his duties if he doesn't win another game this year.
    7. Release Mac of his duties if he fails to show any improvement the rest of year.
    6. Keep Mac no matter the circumstances.

I think this poll may indicate another overall expectation. That most are leaning towards releasing Mac. Agree with Fletch that a poll can be written in a way to show an intended result, even if not purposely done.
