    cal got screwed

I saw the highlights to the cal/ucla game. And cal go ***** on three calls. The foul with 15 seconds left on the inbounds play. Then when the ucla guy tipped the ball out of bounds and they gave ucla the ball. And then the biggest rip off. When the shot came from behind the backboard. Wow. Seeing that kind of reffing makes me so irritated. Even if its Isu or anyone else. Those refs took that game completely away from cal.

    Re: cal got screwed

I know folks like to say that refs can't decide a game, but let me tell you, there are was to strategically "screw up" making calls that will sink even the best of teams.

Especially when they are facing close, quality competition that is set up to exploit the bad calls.

Yes, it was clear from the replay that the shot was behind the backboard. The ref said the ball was shot over the corner - and the play can't be reviewed.

PS: I never knew a shot behind the backboard was illegal.

    Re: cal got screwed

I think that rule is crap anyways...if you can throw it over the hoop and score, more power to you. I'm guessing the intention is to prevent it from happening on inbounds, but if they're willing to try it, let 'em.

Stanford got just as raped the other night against UCLA and it cost them the Pac-10 Title too. Clean block by Stanford called a foul and the game goes to OT where everyone's favorite UCLA wins...total crap.

    Re: cal got screwed

First, I loved the shot. What a great play.

Having said that, it should clearly have been ruled no basket. I didn't know such a rule existed until this weekend.

IMO, modify the rule to allow that shot (as long as it doesn't touch the out-of-bounds portion of the backboard) but not allow a shot while a player is inbounding the ball.

Although, man - allowing that would be sweet too. Think of the possibilities for high-flying Clark dunks via rebounding a missed shot on an inbounds play!

Nothing is going to happen and the refs won't ever admit their mistake... Happens all the time.

    Re: cal got screwed

I think an issue may lie in the different backboard supports throughout the nation. If they allow those shots then everyone will have to keep the shot clock in a certain spot and not have the bars supporting the backboard in a place that could interfere with those shots. (See Cameron Indoor) You can't allow it in one arena but not allow it in another. With saying everything behind or above the backboard is out of bounds it saves a lot of headaches.

Both of those game were at UCLA too. I hate that there aren't better ways to review or adjust a call. They are 26-5 in my opinion, not 28-3.

    Re: cal got screwed

just to baffle everyone a little more, in HS bball the rule is the same ... for rectangular backboards. The shot would have counted on the older fan shaped backboards some high schools still have.

The distinction isn't made in the college game because they've all gone to the rectangular boards.

Here's a video clip of the most famous behind the backboard shot in basketball history. I'm not sure of the details, but it appears the ref is waving it off ... whether it's for stepping oob or because of the shot I'm not sure. Also not sure of the NBAs version of the rule
