The winter of our discontent . . .

Those of us who live in Iowa or somewhere in the upper climes have weathered a horrendous winter. Constant, continuing sub-zero temperatures, snow fall every other day -- literally. It has been a particularly ugly season.

It occurs to me that the state of ISU intercollegiate athletics is not unlike this winter: Both have been a series of travails, but we hardy fans have almost made our way through, blue skies and warmer weather are in the offing.

It appears to me that all four of ISU's major sports -- Football, Mbb, Wbb, Wres -- are prepared to take one or more steps forward next year.

Most of us are pumped to see what Gene and Co. can do in their second season. The foundation has been laid and the coaches have moved on to constructing the program's edifice. Almost all areas of the team hold promise for improved performance this fall.

Bill Fennelly said Monday during his call-in show that next year's Wbb team will be the most experienced and deepest in his ISU tenure. Almost everyone is back, including injured players Toccara Ross and Nicky Wieben.

Greg has a ton of returning experience, and, with the addition of a couple of serious outside shooting threats, his third Mbb team will be well-schooled in his style of play and will be veteran across the lineup. Time to step it up a couple of notches and demonstrate visible improvement to the fans (not just details in improvement largely observed only by coaches). Greg and Co. will do just that, I believe.

Cael's wrestlers, near the top of the national heap right now, he's only just begun to craft a program -- his program -- that will contend for national championship team titles every March when it takes to the NCAA tournament mats.

All four programs have either achieved stability or have taken serious steps toward that end. I'm one of those Cyclones fans who can't help but be cheered by the thought that we've bottomed out, can't help but be buoyed by the prospect that much better times are immediately ahead.

I see clearly to the far-off horizon; the features of the entities shimmering there are too distant to distinguish, sure, but the outlines of those shapes are suggestive, giving one hope -- and excitement -- for our future.

Excellent post, I sure hope we as fans have seen the bottom. (I thought this back in 2002-2003 though too).

I like your outlook and optimism, a refreshing change from some of the posts on here...

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

I think our high water mark is y2k, when we were 32-5 in BB followed by 9-3 in FB.

How about: "Our current high water mark is y2k. I can't wait to see the next one"
