Did they all lose 5 recruits their first two years, plus all the guys that decided to leave?

His fault or not, there is a player retention issue.

It's been 27 years since we've had a worse conference record.

I'm guessing our recruiting class this year will be one of the worst in last 20+ years.

Brackins will need a really big year next year to turn things around for us.

Well Duh...His fault not on most of them.

I'm not enough of factoid guy to go back up and look up all the players the 3 previous coaches cycled through. Perhaps ISUcyfan can help us out as he's good at that...

Sorry, can't do that! But there have been players in and out of the program with all of the last three coaches...it happens at most universities.

Gotta agree with CrossCyed here, though. Neither Floyd, Eustachy, or Morgan had a weaker hand dealt them as McDermott. Floyd had a weak team and proceeded to go get Cato, Willoughby, Bankhead, and Pratt. That kind of instant success with a motley cast of characters is an anomaly, and I would bet Floyd would even admit that.

I think McDermott will get lesser talent, but do more with less than most other coaches. I think we've already seen a little of that.

That is because they know what offense to expect. The question is if 4 and 5 stars want to run in a very controlled offense and go to Ames. I think so.

I still think he's responsible for the recruits that he brings in. Let's hope this offseason is finally the one when no one leaves.

I absolutely think so, too. The HC is responsible for the product on the floor, and I think most quality coaches admit that.

There are unfortunate circumstances out of anyone's control, though, and only until it becomes a pattern will I say it it because of a coach.

Football over in IC is an example of a pattern, McDermott losing patchwork recruits is not yet a pattern, IMO.

Brister and Vette are two guys that quit during the season. That's the kind of stuff that worries me.

When does it become fair to judge him on this stuff, though? That's my biggest question.

That being said, I do expect the issue to start to rectify itself, as we are reaching for fewer guys. A lot of the guys that have left were late commits that seemed to be lower targets.

Drake plays a lot of upperclassmen that have been in a similar system for 3 to 4 years. Last year they won like 17 games and a lot of games they lost were close. This year they have played in close games and won them. One big difference is experence. Josh Young maybe the only player on that team that can play in the Big 12. The rest of them have played togethger, know the system, are smart players, and work their butts off. When Tom Davis took that program over it was about as low as a program could be and look at it now. It took sometime but they are getting it done. They dont have Hilton, Sweet 16s, Conference Titles (until now) to get the kids. ISU has all those. They do have hard work, smart players, good coaching, and experence. ISU has 3 of 4 with the 4th to come with time.

I have been paying attention to other teams on offense. I dont see much difference in what ISU is doing and other teams. The difference is ISU doesnt have the guys that can make any shot. 64 pts a game wont get it done. The problem with ISU's D is some of our gaurds are not gifted or healthy enough to keep up with average guards in the conference and the guys new to they system have a hard time of helping out.

    But what do I know.

Okay. Good point. Other succesful programs also run similar styles of offense. Tim Floyd would be very similar to McDermott in that area. Bobby Knight could be accused of being that way too. So not bad company for McDermott.

Let's hope he continues to bring them in.
