    "Another nationally-ranked offensive team.."

    From the McCarney presser:

"We've got our hands full with another nationally-ranked offensive team coming in here in Texas Tech."

Does this mean offensively that TT is in the top-25 and therefore nationally- ranked?

He can sure slice up the numbers.....wow.

No, we don't have to let it go. It's getting old.

McC gets asked a more than nominal amount of questions in a week....and he has to answer them in some fashion. He has alot of interesting spin on the performance of our team, however, when asked about the opposition these are the sorts of things you have to say.

Would you rather he come out saying Tech sucks? The last thing we need is to motivate the opposition, when we have enough problems of our own.

    Re: "Another nationally-ranked offensive team.."

Would you prefer Mac come out with something like this:

"Well, we are playing a Texas Tech team who was nationally ranked to open the season but will come into Ames as a disappointment. No doubt about it, they were waaaaaay over-rated and we will have to put forward a real average effort in order to beat this team who was whopped agasint a real, real bad Colorado team. Their offense used to be real special but this year they just suck. Their coach is also real bad and it should be easy for the sack of watermelons we promoted to offensive coordinator this week to handle them real, real easily."

I'm not saying he come out & say they SUCK, but he should at least give his own team some credit! Do you think his players hear this crap? OF COURSE! DMAC has mentally (& verbally) written off every game with these commments! Why not say something like "ISU is determined in practice & is due to have a breakout performance! Tech is coming into Cyclone-country & we'll be ready to defend our house!" That's much more motivating than "we're facing an all-world quarterback, running back, defense, coach, fans, chearleaders, mascot, etc in Texas Tech. We'll need our BEST GAME to beat them!"

Get real. That isn't coach talk...that's covering your ***** because you're not living up to anyone's expectations...AGAIN!

    Re: "Another nationally-ranked offensive team.."

Does anybody remember 2003, when we were getting waxed all over the place, and we just lost our last home game against Colorado, to go 0-8 in big 12 play? You remember what Mac said after that?

    "We won the second half".

He can't help himself. It's his nature. Just let it go.

    Re: "Another nationally-ranked offensive team.."

St8Grad.......my post was commenting on the above statement about Dan's opinion on the Tech team. No where does the quoted statement expound upon Dan's expectations/thoughts for our team. In the absence of this, I'm not going to comment on my assumptions of what Dan might have said about our team.

I think he should say positive comments about our team though. No one would ever dispute that......unless your name is Larry Eustachy. (I love Larry, but thats a different discussion) As far as expectations go, I think Dan has been pretty clear all along that the expectations for this team is to compete for Big 12 championships. Whether or not he achieves those goals has been problematic.

Look, Dan learned from the best in Hayden Fry on how to handle the psychology of the game. I'm not so worried about that aspect as much as his ability to get our talent to translate to wins on the field.

No, nobody is asking that. I'm sorry if this is harsh but some of you people are ridiculous with your replies. No one is asking Mac to start saying dumb crap like that. We're tired of hearing Mac go crazy with the spin time and time again. We want less spin. That's all. Not the complete opposite. Just less. He sounds so stupid when he spins SO much. Does every coach use "coach-speak"? Hell yes. But theres "no doubt about it," Mac does it more than any coach I've heard. It's not like we've just noticed this. He's been doing it for 12 years and it was fine at first, but you know what, after 12 years, we don't want to keep hearing how the other team is better than us all the time and how it would be understandable to lose to them etc etc etc. He fricken builds up the other team every single week as if they're God's gift to football. It's getting ridiculous. Again, it's perfectly OK to praise the team your playing against, but using useless stats and spin to do so makes him look stupid. 1 in 54 undefeated home teams in America? Please tell me how many coaches of those 54 teams said that INSANE stat at their presser. I bet it's few to none.

How hard is it to say "We have a lot of respect for Tech, we think they're a solid team and they'll give us a challenge this weekend. They've got a great passing offense obviously that we'll have to be ready for. But we like our chances." Simple. Concise. Respectful. Is that so wrong to want something along those lines?

BryceC, I agree, it IS Mac's nature, so maybe I should let it go.
I hate it though. Drives me nuts.

    Re: "Another nationally-ranked offensive team.."

C4L.....maybe you should do Dan's presser every week. I like how you concisely stated our matchup with them.

Look guys, the key in handling the press is to not give the opponent any billboard material to get all upset about. Any time a coach talks about his own team.....I think you have to trust his judgement since he has the pulse of the team. I guess I will bring up Larry.....the way LE got his teams to focus was to make certain there ego's weren't so large that they forgot the fundamentals that got them there success. Since LE was so popular in Ames, nobody cared what tactic he used since he was so successful.

If Dan was winning Big 12 championships, you'd all be saying he's a genius for not giving the opponent any billboard material. But, since we've struggled people are dissecting everything he says for holes......I think this is useless banter arguing about what he should or should not say about the team to the press. We should worry more about the performance of the team on Saturday's.
