    2 Lane Roundabouts??

Hey, anyone know how these work? There are several that I use frequently and I swear that someone is going to crash into me very soon.

Obviously, yield to the traffic in the roundabout already. However, I don't understand how there can be two lanes. Must the right lane ALWAYS take the next exit from the roundabout? If not, couldn't the car on the inside and car on the outside cross paths? I think some more signage is needed. I don't know how to use it. i doubt most people do. The single lane ones are no issues. But when there is an inside lane and and outside lane, what are the rules.

Whoever the idiot is that thinks these things are a good idea needs to be publicly flogged. People around here don't know how to use a double turn lane let alone a round about.

    Re: 2 Lane Roundabouts??

I believe if you're only going a 1/4 of half way around, you stay in the outer lane. If you are going 3/4 or want to do a U, you're supposed to be in the inner lane until you get to your turn.

Yield to traffic in the turnabout already.

I actually like them. But agree not many people understand it and because of that, they're rather dangerous.

I found one from the city of clive:

    <Roundabouts

Sounds to me like a crash between the inside lane and outside lane is a real possibility. Which to me seems stupid. Someone could exit the roundabout across your right lane at any moment. It says to not drive beside or passs anyone in the roundabout. Well, then, why even have two lanes????

Yeah you're not supposed to go all the way around in the outside lane, just the first right turn or straight ahead.

And I think there is only 1 lane roundabout in Clive. At boston Parkway and 156th. The others are single lane.

OK...Lets say I'm in the right and want to go straight through. It says you can use right or left. If I'm in the right and someone is next to me in the left, how do I know at my first right to exit the roundabout, the car in the left won't turn into me or in front of me on my way to the straight ahead exit? See my point?

That car isn't supposed to turn right at the first turn. They can either go straight through, or take the exit after straight through, or make a U turn.

edit: go about 7 minutes into that video on the page I posted, and they explain it.

    From Urbandale's website.

    How To Use A Roundabout

Also, since you are technically suppsoed to yield to traffic in the roundabout, you shouldn't be right next to another car while you are in the roundabout. You never know when someone is going to exit.

Isn't that kind of presuming that the car got in at the entrance immediately left of yours?

What if your heading northbound, he's heading south and wants to make what is effectively a left hand turn? meaning he want's to go on the street immediately to your right.

Then he should be in the inside lane (3/4s the way around) and either move ahead or behind you.

    It can be confusing.

Edit: Nevermind - I guess the golden rule is "Do not enter the roundabout BESIDE a vehicle already in the roundabout; the vehicle may be exiting the roundabout at the next exit"

    Re: 2 Lane Roundabouts??

There's one that was close to my former home in Iowa City/Coralville. Amazing how many idiots didn't know how to use one. I've seen people stop while they're inside the roundabout because they think they have to yield to incoming traffic. I've also seen a senior citizen take a left into the roundabout... I was expecting a collision within 5 seconds. Lucky for them it didn't happen.
