Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

From Report: Southwest Flew "unsafe" Planes For Months — Civil Aviation Forum | Airliners.net

    Official SWA Response.

Hello everyone, I wanted to share with you our official response to the news reports.

We are aware of all of your concerns and passion for the safety of Southwest flights. And, no one is more passionate about the safety of our Customers and Employees than we are. As an official representative of Southwest Airlines, I would like to make clear the following points:

First and foremost, our Customers must know this was never and is not now a safety of flight issue.

The media is suggesting that the FAA plans to fine Southwest regarding aircraft inspections, but to date, we have not received any notification or indication from the FAA that that is what they plan to do.

The inspections for early signs of skin cracking on some of our aircraft in question were one of many routine, redundant, and overlapping inspections of our fleet and involved an extremely small area in one of the many overlapping inspections. When we discovered a missed inspection, we informed the FAA and promptly completed the missed inspections in March 2007. The FAA approved our actions and considered the matter closed as of April 2007.

Again, safety is always our number one concern. Southwest has an excellent maintenance program, and this experience has helped improve the overall safety of the fleet.

Pish Posh. I'll fly until a plane goes down. These seems to be more a caging of harmless info in terrifying verbiage than a serious concern.

Re: All you SouthWest fliers might want to think again...

The media is good for at least one bogus news item a day. This is today's. Yesterday it was the Mildenhall.com thing.

On a related note, though, when I was doing contract maintenance at DSM, an pilot squawked a flap problem on an aircraft that had just landed from a flight from the West Coast.

Well, when I got to the aircraft, I quickly discovered that the flap drive was rusted solid. The pilot swore up and down that it worked until his preflight at DSM, despite the same aircraft landing not an hour before and having flown halfway across the country.

So, dude basically flew cross-country with the flaps in the "down" position and lied about it. I always thought they parked the birds with the flaps "up". Makes me feel really good about the maintenance status of that same company.

I guess my big question: Does Southwest fly to Jamaica? What kind of fares would they charge for that?

Re: All you SouthWest fliers might want to think again...

I fly Southwest most every week and and have for over 10 years. I am on a flight Saturday to Vegas with my wife (Companion Pass). The Southwest safety record has been excellent, yes they turned themselves in to the FAA! a year ago. Now some "whistleblower" is involved from FAA, a Government agency I might add.

Southwest boards more passengers in a year than any other domestic airline!
Southwest makes a profit every quarter while the legacies lose record amounts and go in and out of Bankruptcy.
Southwest doesn't lose luggage like United, delta and Northworst! I check my bags every week!
Southwest has one of the best on time records in the industry unlike the above mentioned legacies.
Southwest hasn't killed a passenger ever! Nor has it crashed a plane!
Southwest is a Low fare easy to travel on airline. I have yet to pay over $300/roundtrip for ticket in over 10 years!

If Iowa had Southwest in des Moines for example the legacies prices would drop and flight cancelations would be minimal. It has happened in over 60 other cities, Southwest is growing and the others merge.

In December 2005, a Southwest plane ran off the end of the runway at Midway in Chicago, crashed through the fence surrounding the airport, and hit several cars on the street. A passenger in one of the cars was killed.

Perhaps now that SW has to start spending on maintenance and inspection, those huge profits might come down a little bit...

    Never flown Southwest...never will...

I would love Southwest to come to Des Moines.

It can't be any less safe than the pile I drive to work every day.

Southwest actually costs more to fly than NWA to many destinations I travel to.
Southwest doesn't have to maintain an extensive network of routes. Consequentially, you can't get to places like Minneapolis without driving 4-8 hours from the closest place that Southwest services. See what kind of flying you have to do to get to, say, Traverse City, MI or Bangor, ME, or Savannah, GA, or Charlottesville, WV, or Fargo, ND.

The minute SW hops into those markets, the price of flying SW will increase because they simply aren't profitable. Do you think NW makes any money flying in/out of Ft. Dodge or Mason City?
