The key to 2008 / 2009: Diante Garrett

The more I think about it, the more it rings true to me. I really think our season next year is going to hinge on how much stronger Garrett can get with the ball. I am not saying bigger, just stronger. You don't have to add a bunch of mass to get strong. For example, when I was 24, I only weighed 172, but I could bench 300. Garrett can add strength.

My point is though, this team is going to need someone who can get into the lane and finish. I don't think Wes J, for all his talent, will be that guy. His handle is decent, but not good enough to be a consistent threat on the drive. Buckley might have that ability, but it is yet to be seen. I am concerned about our inside game, but I just don't see an option out there that we are going to get to take care of the problem, which is why we need our guards to get some of our points in the paint. I really think if DG can put it together and keep improving like he has been, we could be in for a fun next season.

Diante looks like a kid out there, playing with a bunch of men. I too think if he puts on some weight or strength he'll be really good. He's got good handles but he gets bumped around a lot. If he puts on some weight over the summer hopefully he can turn out to be more like a Stinson, taking a bump but still able to take the shot.

If Diante doesn't get his head on straight he will be watching Buckley, Lucca and Wesley from the bench.

I bet Diante has more tradional three point plays (and one) than anyone on the team...

Diante might be our best player right now. Jiri has been good on O but stinks on D, Wes is hit or miss, Rahshon is battling injury, Petey can't move the ball, Craig is slumping.

DG is the ONLY player that can create his OWN shot.

Weight will help DG but if really wants to make a difference he'll work on his jump shot. If Garrett was at threat to nail a couple shots from outside it would make a defense react differently.

Weight & shooting will come over time.

That may be true, but it's because we are lacking on that end. Diante is tiny out there and a little bump and he goes flying. Just hoping he can be stronger.

You sound like a little power house. You need to check out the Arm Wrestling thread and get involved.

Re: The key to 2008 / 2009: Diante Garrett

I think you can see that his confidence has increased as the conference season has progressed. Early in the year a lot of folks here were begging him to be more aggressive with driving to the hoop, and now we can see that he appears to be much more comfortable doing that. He has gotten better about finishing, drawing fouls, and dishing to the open man. If he has improved this much in conference play in one season, I think we can expect him to be better next year.

That said, I don't think it's fair to put that onus on the young man. He'll still make plenty of mistakes. I expect next season to hinge more on the development/emergence of our bigs than anything that Diante can provide. (Diante, if you're reading, this is your prodding to prove me wrong! Go win us a Big XII championship next year!)

I don't really understand what this means. Diante is a true freshman playing in an extremely tough Big 12 this season. He is averaging 6 ppg, and close to 3 apg. And those numbers are up a little more through his last 5 or 6 games. He just had a 6 assist and 0 TO game against kansas. I think he will be fine if he just adds a little weight to that frame. Even if we don't end up with a big next year, i think we could be alright. Like someone has said before, Texas doesn't have a true center and there doing ok. Granted, we won't have the guards that they do, but they will still be pretty good.

I partly agree with you, and partly disagree with you.

Diante seems to finish fairly strong at the rack. In that respect I disagree with you.

However, he needs to get stronger with the ball in the frontcourt when setting up the offense. He gets knocked out of position when opposing guards body him up and it throws off the offense. So, in that respect, I definitely agree with you.

DG is 2 years away from being an above avg. point guard IMO. Next year is gonna be tough still.

Which is usually true for any player not named Michael Beasley. Look at Evanecker for Drake, hate to have them in the shoe that long but if thats what it takes.
