    Computer nerds?

For some reason I'm not hearing anything from the speakers on my Dell Inspiron 6000. I've checked all volume and mute buttons and everything is good to go there. That's about all I know how to do. Can anyone help

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

Are you running Windows? Check the volume settings in windows (speaker icon down by your clock). Double click on it, make sure volume is turned up and nothing is muted.

Otherwise, did they get unplugged from your PC somehow?

    Re: Computer nerds?

Dell BIOS has a series of diagnostics you can run. When you boot, there's a F5 option (or one of the F keys, i can't remember which now), that if you hit the key during the first 30 seconds of the boot, it will take you into a diagnostics mode. Watch the boot screen, it will tell you which F key to hit.

The diagnostics take about an hour to run, but there's a sound/speaker diagnostic check as one of the 500 or so tests it runs. Run the diagnostics, and see if you get sound that way. If so, you've got a software issue. If not, you've probably got a hardware issue.

That's a start. If it's hardware, you're likely to need to swap out a component, most likely the motherboard.

    Good luck.

Double click on your audio settings icon and make sure nothing is checked. You can also uninstall your audio driver and reinstall it in case a driver is messed up. One thing you can do is play a song. while its playing, open and close your laptop screen, but dont let the latch click, just close it to about an inch. If your sound comes in and out while you do this, you have a frayed speaker wire. If everything else you tried doesnt work, there is a chance the speaker wire has been severed.

I think it's the F2 key, that you hit as soon as the word Dell comes on the screen. I was working through something with a tech support guy of their's. and he explained this to me in slow, broken English, that the F2 key was on the top row of the keyboard, and had both an F and a 2 on it, thus is was called F2.

Not long before, he explained to me how to double-click the mouse. I guess you use the left button, and click it two times.

I was thrilled with his service........

    Re: Computer nerds?

Another question for everyone while this thread is up. I just moved into a new house and have TimWarner cable internet with 15 mb download. I am looking to set up a wireless network and wanted to know what routers you would recommend. If i set up a router will it slow down my computer I have hardwired in my office? Thanks in advance

I would go with Linksys. Easy to set up. There will be no slow down.

They are all pretty good these days. What laptop are you going to use? You may want to get a Pre-n router.

A wireless-G is fine. There isnt really a point to N right now. If its the same price and you get G with an N, then fine. But I wouldnt seek it out. A Linksys WRT54G would be fine for you.

Agreed. You can't really go wrong with linksys. I have a D-Link that I got relatively cheap, it's served me well for the last 5 years or so. Any name brand will do what you need, Linksys, D-Link, Netgear come to mind, I only have experience with D-Link and Linksys though.

Or you could get an Apple router with the hard drive built into it. Not cheap, but very handy. :)
