    Best sentence I read today

from Division of Labour: Enhanced by Ethanol
Just one problem--saying gasoline is enhanced by ethanol is like saying a swimming pool is enhanced by pee.

I don't know a lot about ethanol. I just know it gives me cheaper gas for a higher octang. Explain your statement. I really don't get it.

    From the link:

That's the claim made on the gas pumps at Wal-Mart. They have cute little cardboard green and yellow ears of corn on the hoses. Just one problem--saying gasoline is enhanced by ethanol is like saying a swimming pool is enhanced by pee. Since ethanol reduces gas mileage and can increase deposits in engines, a more accurate word would be contaminated or diluted.

Re: Best sentence I read today

The "increased deposits" argument is totally bunk.

At 10% ethanol you get higher octane fuel and the decrease in mileage is negligible. Some studies have shown blends at about 20 to 30 % actually INCREASE mileage. Blender pumps will be hitting the market soon.

I admit that I use the ethanol as well but it is only "cheaper" at the pump because it is subsidized by tax dollars. So you are actually paying for it in the long run.

I don't believe the "increased deposits" for a second. That's BS.

Ethanol is subsidized by tax dollars, but that is our government trying to pay to get out from under the thumb of the middle east. For consumers, there's a tradeoff of lower mpg with the lower price. Basically, I'd rather give my money to Iowa farmers than the arabs.

Re: Best sentence I read today

There are plenty of ways to attack ethanol, but I take issue with reference to a "subsidy." Ethanol is not subject to the excise tax on gasoline which is about 18 cents the last I knew. A subsidy is an outright grant. An absence of a tax is not a subsidy. This language implies that not taxing someone is giving them money, which I hope is not how most Americans think. It is the taxpayers' money in the first place.

I realize there are loan guarantees and other programs and tariffs that are debatable, but most of the "subsidy" refers to the excise tax aspect of Ethanol.

BTW, there is no real evidence that modern vehicles have any trouble burning ethanol or it causes any performance/maintenance issues. Older vehicles that had been burning regular gas reported some issues when they switched to ethanol, but that was mostly 20 years ago. E85 has been shown to produce lower mileage, but it is much cheaper per gallon and it is usually cheaper to run on E85, dependent on the cost at the pump for the two products.

I've been told not to put Ethanol fuel in my car because it burns hotter and isn't good for my engine, and I also need to use High Octane fuel for my car.

Here is a good cite to determine whether it is currently economical to use E85 if anyone is interested.

    E85 Prices

E85 could be signficantly cheaper at the pump if the oil companies allowed their franchisees to reduce the price.

If you need high octane fuel the best bang for your buck is E10 at the pump. It sounds like your mechanic is stuck in 1986.

Don't get me wrong I'd rather be using ethanol than full oil byproducts that are shipped in from the middle east. I just don't think that the use of ethanol is the cure-all some make it out to be for our future energy and environmental crisis.
