    Digital Camera advice

My wife and I are going to Europe this summer and want to buy a new camera for the trip. We want to keep it around a 200-250 max and are wondering advice on great cameras as well as cameras to avoid.

    Thanks!

We have a cannon SD750 that we picked up for $200 this winter. It is a pretty nice point and shoot. I still use my rebel for most things, but this one is very small and very easy to use, and it takes pretty nice pictures.

Fuji Finepix S700 is one my son has and I am thinking of getting. It is well rated by Consumer Reports and is much cheaper than a Canon.

Anyone else have any experience with the Fuji Finepix S700 I would like to know how well it has worked for you.

    Re: Digital Camera advice

Need a little bit more guidance I think before anyone can make a good recommendation. Are you looking for tiny pocket-sized, or do you mind a little more heft. Do you want AA batteries or do you mind a proprietary setup? Does the 250 include everything(case, memory card, etc) or just the camera?

I'm a huge fan of Canon cameras. The SD1000 is nice little camera or if you don't mind something a little bulkier the A570 is pretty good also. Check out Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ for reviews and lots of information.

Edit: Figured I should mention that I own a Rebel XT, my mom has a Rebel XT along with her old Canon A70, and my sister just got an SD1000 to replace her Canon A80 that the screen broke on (after she dropped it several times).

Also don't get sucked into the entire megapixels thing. At this stage it simply doesn't matter for 95% of users. In some cases more megapixels can be a bad thing on some cameras

    Re: Digital Camera advice

I've read the reviews on the Canon A570 IS camera and they're quite good. You can get the camera for $150...

    Canon | PowerShot A570 IS Digital Camera | 1773B001 | B&H Photo

Nice features of this camera are high ISO options, image stabilizer, in-camera red-eye handling and it takes AA batteries.

The point-and-shoot camera that I really like and is damn close to an SLR is the Canon Powershot G9...

    Canon | PowerShot G9 Digital Camera | 2082B001 | B&H Photo Video

The reviews on this unit are absolutely insane - people are in love with it. If you're willing to spend $460 - I'd highly recommend this camera. Mrs. ISU fan wants a smaller camera she/we can use when we don't want the SLR. It's not on the horizon yet, but when we get one - it will be this camera.

Interesting the price point the G9 is within $30 of the Rebel XT with the kit lens. Granted the G9 is smaller and does have a longer zoom, and once you go to an SLR you start finding more and more things to spend money on (I don't want to think about how much money I've spent on camera gear).

I would buy the $150 Cannon. New technology is always coming out.

    Re: Digital Camera advice

I just got a Kodak V1233. It's 12.0MP has over a dozen pictures settings (night, motion, landscape, panorama, etc.) and records video clips in HD. The video clips look better than clips from the last digital camcorder I had.

The pictures are average for the price range, but the video clips are amazing for $200. Plus it's very small and the view screen is large and bright.

I have been loading onto my computer and organizing videos from my Cannon - nice quick clips.

We have the same camera. We love it. We had olympus cameras prior to this one and both Olympus cameras always seemed to take blurry pictures. The Cannon point and shoot does great. No blurry pictures. Nice colors. The battery last forever and it is very lightweight.

    Re: Digital Camera advice

I've got a an Cannon SD1000 Power Shot 7.1 Meg.

Size of a cell phone to put in your pocket. Takes great pictures AND it takes awesome video.

In fact we do all of our video of the kids with this little camera.

Get the biggest camera disc you can afford if you're going to be taking lots of video.

I would have bought the 1000 if I wanted to spend more.

The 750 has been great. It also takes great movies and sound. The video quality is about the same as our Sony Mini DV cam.

I have the Fuji S700. It's selling for less than 200 currently. I really enjoy it. You can point and shoot if you want, but it has several bells and whistles if you want.

    Re: Digital Camera advice

I did a little research into this for my mother's Christmas gift this year. I like the site below. A little digging can get you a lot of info.
$200 - $300 Digital Cameras - Unbiased reviews, prices, and advice from DigitalCamera-HQ
Based on most of the stuff I saw, Cannon makes some of the best quality cameras, although they come at a higher price. We ended up getting a Cannon S850. I took it with me on when I went on vacation in January and it was nice. Small size, lots of options, and took good pictures. I especially liked the photostitch software that came with it that makes it very easy to turn multiple pictures into one panoramic image.

As was previously mentioned, don't get too caught up in megapixels. Cramming too many megapixels onto the same sized image sensor means that each pixel has a smaller sensing area, which can result in "noisy" images. The best balance of the two right now is usually in the 6-8 megapixel range, but it depends on the camera (bigger cameras can have bigger imaging sensors).

Some of the previous recommendations for cheaper model Cannons are probably pretty good if you just want something small to take simple pictures with.

    Re: Digital Camera advice

I got the Canon A710 for Christmas last year and couldn't be happier. It's a 7.1 MP with a 6x optical zoom. I was always told to buy the most optical zoom you can afford. It uses standard AA batteries but I use rechargeables.
