North Grand Mall in Ames: Question

Is this a good place to spend some time? We are going to be up in Story City tomorrow afternoon looking at a dog, and we were going to go to Reiman Gardens too, but its not open til 4/1.

Is there anything to do at this mall? Is it an inside access mall?

Re: North Grand Mall in Ames: Question

I used to work in the Mall Office as a marketing asst and was then an Asst Mgr at Sam Goody, so I have spent a ton of hours there...

It's an okay mall. Not great, but pretty good. It's inside access, but some of the stores on the east end have been closed because they're going to expand it to add a ped mall area.

There's a GAP, Penney's, Younkers, Eddie Bauer, a couple of sports stores (Sports Page and Foot Locker), some crafts store, a place where you can get swords or something, and a variety of other stores. There is also a blacklight mini-golf place in there.

Meh. If it's your wife's or daughter's cup o' tea, it would be fine. I can't stand malls myself though. Reiman Gardens is one of the most amazing gardens I have ever seen though, definately need to see that in the spring and summer with 'em Jon. Looking for that Chihauha?

Re: North Grand Mall in Ames: Question

We have been to Reiman Gardens before and love it.

We have a dog picked out and paid for...just not going to get it until the second week in April after we get back from a vacation...so we are going to visit it. It will keep the wife and daughter happy :) We are getting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from Kountry Pets in Story City.

Just looking for something to kill an hour or so after lunch. Indoor mini golf actually sounds like a good idea.

Not to take over the thread but I understand that the city coucil finally approved the building of the new mall. Move over Coralville and Jordan Creek, yeah!

I just went to their website and saw the artists renderings. Looks nice. An open air aspect on the north side...now, that will go over well in winter ;)

But it will be nice in spring and summer

Yeah you can blow an hour or so pretty easy there. You can also blow an hour pretty easy at Wal-mart. Just depends on what you find entertaining.

I would rather have bamboo reeds shoved under my fingernails than have to spend an hour in that wal-mart.

I hadn't been to the mall for about 4 years until this past fall. I thought it was in pretty sad shape.

It gets worse. When I drove by the new Super Wal-Mart in Ames I swear I saw a McDonalds sign for next to it our in it. That is not a good combo. That brings them all out.

So is the new Mall having access to the outside for each store or is the old mall making access to each store from the outside.??
Having your customers enter from the outside in the winter is like saying "I am good with losing 5-10% business. Plus you get to work in a store with the door pretty much open all day from customers coming and going. Should be fun.

EDIT: I read the article from above. The old mall acutally looks pretty nice in that drawing. Would be a nice summer hangout if they could get some bands or something playing etc...

On the new mall....Its over a million Square feet? So is that like Valley West? I need a comparison.

"“We have every confidence that we will bring to Ames and its residents the very finest in upscale retailing with some of the most dynamic retailers in our industry. Our plans are still to develop over a million square feet with over 600,000 square feet being in an upscale, lifestyle center and over 400,000 square feet being in a power center"

EDIT2: Did some quick research. Looks like it will be the same size as Coralville. A little bigger than Valley West. Of course it really depends on what kind of stores they are putting in. That just seems a little large to have that kind of mall with an existing mall for a town that big. Then having 2 large malls and a Very large Jordan Creek just down the road in DM is kind of odd also. But it should get a lot of Interstate traffic.

I would rather spend an hour waiting to get a table at Hickory Park. It's a pretty weak mall. Gap, Vicki's Secret, not much more

Walmart? I'll just wait for the state fair. At least it's outside.

Re: North Grand Mall in Ames: Question

Yea, I'd definitely vote against killing time at North Grand...small and not too many stores.

As far as the new mall it still seems like the white elephant. They proposed the thing before Jordan Creek was built and in true Ames fashion its 7 years later and still no mall. Pretty impressive.

Re: North Grand Mall in Ames: Question

Either both malls will do mediocre or one will fail. If N Grand is to make it it has to change everything about how it operates. Several stores will leave for the new mall when it opens.

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.
