Could we go with a 3 guard lineup next season?

Last night before going to bed I watched a tape of the magical 99-00 Elite Eight season that the athletic department made and sold after the season (Ah, it was nice to see great ISU basketball again, even if it was from eight years ago!)

Anyway, watching it I remembered how great that backcourt was with Tinsley, Horton, and Micheal Nurse. I'm not expecting our talent level next season to be anywhere close to those three guys, but even if we do land a serviceable big or two, what do you all think are the chances that we could go with three guards, say Garrett, Staiger, and Haluska, or any combination really?

G-Mac's best team at UNI used three guards with Ben Jacobson, Eric Crawford, and Brooks McKowen, with John Little coming in off the bench too. I wonder if he's considered it at all.

There isn't a doubt in my mind that we will play with 3 guards next year.

It's definitely not out of the question. Villanova has had success with a 3 guard lineup. I think it would be fun to watch because there would probably be more running.

Unless we pull in a big man, we'll almost have to, with CB at the 5 and WJ moved to forward. Not a lot of low block scoring, but it could be fun to watch!!

Re: Could we go with a 3 guard lineup next season?

I would almost think that we will be running a four guard lineup next year (if you count wes as a guard). I, as well of others, anticipate a Peterson, Garrett, Staiger, W. Johnson, Brackins lineup next year. Now if we sign vanderbeken sp? I think it would be diante staiger wes cb and jv.

Hell, Villanova has used a 4-guard lineup regularly in the past.

Re: Could we go with a 3 guard lineup next season?

I just hope that if we run a 3 or four guard rotation next year, that we don't have the point guard bring it down, and then pass it in to the 1 big guy on the court and have the other 2 or 3 guards stand around like this year.

Those types of rotations only work with a motion-oriented offense, and such a thing hasn't existed this year.

Re: Could we go with a 3 guard lineup next season?

We need those guards to be able to shoot the ball well from outside too (Staiger, Eikmeier, Haluska). McDermott's system is really formed around a lot of outside shooting it seems. Those 3 guys will give us that threat next year. Buckley, Garrett and Peterson will give us a true point guard rotation. And hopefully Wesley and Craig can move closer to the basket. I know both can shoot from outside but I would like to see them both banging the offensive boards.

My only worry with that is WJ is still pretty slender and may not be able to bang with some of the big boys. He's more of a small forward/slasher which would benefit from more long shots and long rebounds.

Wesley led the Big 12 in offensive rebounds last year, when he was even smaller than he is now. He held up well then, I don't see why he couldn't do it this year.

Running a 3 or 4 guard line up would be tough to match up on the defensive end, especially because McDermott only plays man to man.

We've played a little zone this year. Not much, but we have.

Re: Could we go with a 3 guard lineup next season?

Doesn't ISU run a three-guard offense right now?

A few weeks ago, Mac, commenting on Wes J's likely position next season, said that in his system the 2 and 3 positions are essentially identical other than that they are on opposite sides of the floor. So, Mac said, it doesn't really matter if Wes is considered a 2 or a 3.

A year ago, I recall Mac saying that playing two 4s has advantages over playing a 4 and a true 5. Flexibility and athleticism, if I recall correctly.

Maybe we'll see a lot of G-G-G-F-F next year? A lineup something like Garrett - Haluska - Staiger - Wes J. - Brackins?

But, then, Mac changes his matchups so often, maybe a starting five is almost irrelevant.

And AT, Mac says he's the best post defender on the team. That means he's going to play a ton next season, you'd think.

Could be that Mac is beginning to develop the flexible lineup -- one with changing options and matchups -- that he's always talking about putting on Hilton's court.

Re: Could we go with a 3 guard lineup next season?

    1. Garrett (Peterson, Buckley) OR NEW GUY?
    2. LUCCA!!! (Haluska, Boozer)
    3. W. Johnson (Eikmeyer)
    4. A Thompson (C. Johnson, Mann, Hamilton)
    5. Brackins (A Thompson, Mann, Hamilton)

The 4/5 position scare the crap out of me. I think we are sitting tight at guard next year. We bring in a German Sniper and one of Michigan's best players. Plus what we have coming back.

I still think we need a Juco 6-10 Body. I don't see much out there though
