What will you do when gas is $4 per gal.

I'm already preparing myself now. I currently drive a truck and have already cut back on driving a ton. But with 4 dollar gas looking ever-more likely. I've started to look for cheap fuel efficient car or motorcycle for the work commute.

The thought of paying $140 to fill my truck is mind blowing, can't wait to pay $5 for a gallon of milk.

I'll just pay it. For some reason, gas prices have never bothered me as much as they seem to bother most people.

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

I already take the bus to work. Laugh if you want, but it costs me $50/month. I can't drive to work for that.

Perfectly reasonable solution, and one that more people should consider. Public transportation not only uses less fuel, but cuts back on emissions as well. A cost and environmentally friendly alternative to driving everywhere. I know some people who work with my dad who bike to work during the summer months. They'll keep a week's worth of suits in the office on one day they drive, bike the rest, change at work, then at the end of the week, they drive one more day and bring their clothes home.

It's just something to get used to. On average, the price of goods and services doubles every ten years while most people's income only goes up about 3-4% a year. The questions should be what are you doing now so that you can live at the same level 10 years from now.

Re: What will you do when gas is $4 per gal.

I wouldn't mind taking the bus to and from work.

However the public transit system in Des Moines is an absolute joke - that is unless you plan on going to Walnut street and that's about it.

Take a look at the western suburb routes sometime, West Des Moines included.

    Can't? That's because there AREN'T ANY.

Otherwise - in the summer I hope to ride my bike to work more often.

Re: What will you do when gas is $4 per gal.

As a chemical engineer, I personally feel $4 gas is positive for this country only in that it will spur American ingenuity and innovation (what we do best) to inspire faster deployment & development of alternative energy so we can tell OPEC et al to 'shove it'.

PS: keep in mind that oil, like gold and other world-market commodities, are priced in dollars and the value of the dollar has fallen 50% in a couple years. Why just in the last 5 days, the dollar has dropped big time - see chart below. More dollars needed to buy (1) barrel.

It depends where you live. The US isn't exactly known for it's great public transportation system. Certain cities have really come along, but not everywhere.

Depends on where you want to go. I got lucky because one of the express routes goes right by my work place. Overall it does lack. If you work downtown it's much easier.

Plant more corn. The samething I did when it got to $2.00, $3.00 and so on, pay for it and go on. Drive my car a bit more. Its sticker shock at first but now I think I get a deal when gas goes to $2.50. When I need to replace my expedition I may go smaller, but that is down the road.

That's why I said western routes. One route stops 60' from my house. But I don't work downtown, Valley West Mall, or Jordan Creek Mall.
