NCAA Football - 32 Bowls? Playoff Needed.

IMO the current bowl structure of 32 bowl games is hardly an ideal setup for what should be NCAA Football’s climatic ending to the season. Here is my restructuring of the current bowl season to include a meaningful playoff. The major bowls would be incorporated into this system. 15 out of the current 32 bowls were selected to be playoff bowls. The remainder of the bowl games were left out. Outside of the current BCS bowls I tried to pick those bowls with some type of history, location or other advantage. For example, Boise and Detroit in December are not exactly desirable destinations for a bowl game while Orlando and Jacksonville are. The current BCS bowls were incorporated into the Quarterfinal – Final rounds of the playoffs. The advantages of the system IMO would be:
    • The incorporation of the existing major bowl sites. These communities would continue to receive the financial benefit of hosting a bowl game. They may even see a larger windfall due to the fact that the bowl is now a part of a meaningful playoff.
    • Should the existing minor bowls wish to continue, they could. In the same manner in which the NIT continues to operate alongside the NCAA Tournament, the minor bowls could continue to function alongside the playoff bowls.
    • Increased exposure and television revenue for NCAA football. March Madness is a month-long celebration of NCAA basketball. Late December through mid-January would turn into the same thing for NCAA football.
    • The playoff system is completed during a time when most schools are out of class due to the holiday season.
    • Most obviously, a true national champion would be determined on the field.

I would love to see something like that. I wish it would happen. When does the BCS contract expire?

If only that could happen. :(

I could see a bunch of Pac 10 and Big 10 enthusiasts complaining about the further degradtion of the Rose Bowl tradition.

Just as long as Shreveport is there as a backup for 6-6 or 7-5 teams in the Big 12.

Here's the beauty of it. There wouldn't be any further degradation. By accepting the BCS affiliation, the Rose Bowl has already accepted the possibility of not playing off the Big Ten vs. the Pac Ten. Now, the championship game of a TRUE playoff would rotate amongst the former BCS bowls. Basically, each year one of the bowls would advance as the title game while the previous title game moves to the lowest quarterfinal rung.

I love the idea of a playoff. I can only imagine the amount of money this would generate. By incorporating the current bowl structure, no one would lose and everyone would win.
