Hospital makes mistake... and you still get the bill.

I love this example. Surgeon screws up the procedure, starts in the wrong area, then does the correct one - and bills the patient for his ****-up.

Unreal. Love the initial example is a guy from Urbandale.

I think Dr Fredrick Nuss is on my short list of doctors to never let near me.

Also, how about the lady who's husband died because the tech gave the wrong blood, and they still tried to bill her..

It's in these kinds of situations where I feel no pity for a so-called "frivolous" lawsuit and the victims in these cases should get all they can. That's just friggin' ridiculous - "Sorry - I ****** up! Oh, by the way, here's you bill..."

Re: Hospital makes mistake... and you still get the bill.

NOT the most egregious example of unfair billing practices. The families of the band that played on the stern of the Titanic, as it sank, were billed for the costs of the the uniforms the band-members "lost" by being drowned.

But billing someone because you screwed up a medical procedure qualifies for "public flogging".

Seriously, some doctor should be worrying how he will be paying for food right now.

my uncle has a bad hand with only 4 fingers and a whole bunch of scar tissue from an accident when he was young. he recently had to get an i.v. hooked up to him and the nurse wanted to stick the needle in his bad hand. he repeatedly told her not to because of all the scar tissue, but she wouldn't listen, and low-and-behold, when she stuck it in there, it caused all sorts of problems. he had to have a special surgeon rework the vessel she damaged, and almost ended up losing his whole hand on account of it. when he checked out, he got a bill for everything-the special surgeon he didn't need until he went to the hospitol included

Hospital billing is a joke. A few months ago we got a bill for my sons birth. He is almost two years old now? WTF I hate how everyone bills separately as well around here. We get bills from the anesthesiologist, hospital itself, and the labwork. Good grief.

Re: Hospital makes mistake... and you still get the bill.

I hate it when they find scapels in people twenty years later. If you are missing equipment, check out the people first please. That is not right to sew up stuff. I have known people to have huge infections with gauze pieces left inside also.

For the scapel, they need to be run through a metal detector when they leave the hospital just in case. This is almost cartoonish.

Operating on the wrong side of the brain is one of my pet peeves. This should not happen in IC.

Heard you can purchase Operating Mishap Insurance. It costs a lot though.

The mistake is bad enough, but the fact that he billed him for it is unconscionable.

Re: Hospital makes mistake... and you still get the bill.

Back in high school, the father of one of my friends went into the hospital for surgery. While he was supposed to be under, he actually was able to hear the doctors talking and remembers them saying that the surgery wasn't necessary. After the surgery was over they realized something had gone really wrong. He spent at least a week, if not longer, at the Mayo Clinic getting whatever these surgeons ******-up fixed. They eventually sued the original surgeons, and got a decent settlement, including one for his wife since certain areas of his anatomy would no longer work as God intended.
Doctors at the same hospital mistook appendicitis in one of my other friends for a kidney infection. After her appendix burst, she spent a VERY long time at a different hospital trying to recover from it. Now she can't have kids because the infection from the appendix spread through most of her torso. Don't know if she sued, but I hope she did.

Re: Hospital makes mistake... and you still get the bill.

I had unsuccessful surgery when I was in college. It was done at Cedar Falls Sartori (Sorrry) Hospital. This same surgeon was sued successfully by two other people for screwups. He was history. Took me ten years to overcome the botch job - ex Army surgeon fixed ne up. I did not sue him.

Check out the surgeons before you proceed. You can find their track record now days from the internet.

When I had a root canal done and supposedly was under, I could hear the dentist singing to his aides. I told him that I liked his singing later. He was shocked.

Re: Hospital makes mistake... and you still get the bill.

The way hospitals handle billing is a joke. I blacked out from a migraine in Houston and the school nurse rushed me to the hospital. I was there for roughly 2 hours, got 1 shot in the butt and nothing else and my total bill was over $3,600. This included the ER bill, which was outrageous, and the physician's charges, which until then I didn't know they charged separately. I may have had another charge in there too, don't remember. Took me forever to sort it all out.

Instances like this make me wonder how much I overpay. They should sort their crap out and bill once for it all. It should not be the patients job to fumble through the billing mess.

You DO know you can refuse to pay a bad doctor bill, don't you?

And if you are debt-free and own your own home, you can basically tell THEM how much you'll pay for a procedure, provided you have decent bargaining skills.

I bargain with physicians all the time. I look at a doctor's bill kind of like I'm buying a car.
