    Gun Laws in Iowa

Was just thinking about this recently. In Illinois there are very restrictive gun laws. I was wondering what they are in Iowa. I'm sure someone on here knows.

It really depends on the county (see: Sherriff) that you are in. Some counties have no problem giving you a right to carry as long as you are and have been a law abiding citizen. But, other counties are not that way.

For instance, Story County will not allow you the right to carry unless you are a retired peace officer, reserve peace officer, or current peace officer. Other counties differ greatly depending on the Sheriff's discrestion.

I thought you could get a carry permit in Story county if you had a very good reason, such as threatened safety. Like an issued restraining order (on someone else)

The rest depends on the Sheriff. Some sheriff's will let just about any law abiding citizen obtain one, if they pass the training course. Many hunters apply for these licenses just so they can have a gun readily available in a vehicle for hunting purposes.

As far as other rules, Iowa is not one of the states that a permit can be acquired for machine guns and other destructive weapons. (These permits are not easily available to anyone in any state)

Iowa does not have any other restrictions in addition to the federal rules and regulations, at least that I am aware of.

    Re: Gun Laws in Iowa

Iowa is one of the most restrictive states vis-a-vis rifles with barrels shorter than 16", noise suppressors and fully automatic guns. They also restrict any devices that manually manipulate the trigger to make semi-autos shoot at a faster rate.

Purchase permits are unevenly regulated. Sheriff's need to approve the permit, and are given 5 days to process, from receipt, however, there is no time limit to acknowledging receipt. The Jasper County sheriff, for example, will wait 3 weeks to acknowledge receipt, even though you handed it to the person at the desk, in person.

Did you know, that in Great Britain, which has some of the most restrictive gun laws on earth, REQUIRES the use of a sound suppressor on rifles? There are some very good health reasons for this. And sound suppressors on rifles are not "silencers". Nothing is "silenced". What really happens is that the sound of the shot is altered, reducing the higher pitched noise. It protects your ears, and those of bystanders, most of all.

Of course, the "anti-silencer" laws are formed by ignorant people, who don't even care if they make good law. As usual....
