Best sandwich you have ever had and where.

Just out of curiousity, what is the best sandwich you have ever had and where did you have it? I am also trying to figure out new places to eat...

Don't want to sound too "homish", but my Mom's ability to take a slice of ham and turn it into the best thing in the world does need to be mentioned. A little napa lettuce, some magical mustard, very thinly sliced sweet onion, on wheat. I'm sure it loses some pizazz on the computer screen, but trust me.

This has been a hundred million years ago but Peton Place in Paton, Iowa put out a hand-breaded pork tenderloin that was pretty amazing. You had to get there early or run the risk of them running out.

That's back when I didn't pay any attention to fried foods or calories

Re: Best sandwich you have ever had and where.

My favorite "sandwich" isn't really a "sandwich", but a Turkish wonder known as the "Doner". The best places bake the bread while you wait, slice it and then fold in spit-barbequed lamb, or turkey into the bread, fresh and hot from oven. On top of that, they put plenty of tzatziki sauce, onions, pickled cabbage, hot peppers, feta cheese and if you ask, a healthy sprinkling of even hotter, ground up, peppers. Oh, and a ton of sesame seeds sprinkled on the dough of the bread before it bakes, as well as in the Doner itself.

It is cheap, filling, and the taste is unreal, especially if they bake the bread right then. Eaten right on the street, while it burns your mouth, along with glasses of Raki, is the best way to eat it.

I made a mean PB&J yesterday. Sandwiches begin and end with the reuben though, my favorite in Ames for a reuben is Dublin Bay.

Ohhh, I remember that place. I would drive out of my way to Ames to stop there to eat a pork tenderloin. It was only a 2 hour drive, but I'd always set it up so I'd hit there about lunchtime.

I'm a big reuben fan, too.

Though, I'm ashamed to admit, I love Monte Cristos. There is NOTHING gastronomically redeeming about them, but I absolutely inhale them.

    My chicken-steak sandwich at Davinicis.

Grilled chicken, mushrooms, american-swiss cheese, grilled onions, green peppers, jalapenos and a dab of cream cheese melted into the mix on a toasted bun....mmmmm tasty fatness! and sometimes i would toss in a little pepperoni. If I ate something like that today, my innards would fall out.

    WATERLOO, IA
    Jack Danielís Gunpowder Tenderloin

Our famous huge grilled tenderloin, rubbed in spicy Gunpowder seasonings and topped with our tangy Jack Danielís sauce, served on a toasted kaiser bun.

Throw a slice of pepper-jack cheese on there and you have a fine sandwich.
