    SI.com: Student/Fan Actions at Games

You know - we've been dangerously close to that line of going too far (some may say we have before) sometimes; this is a well done article by Grant Wahl regarding student sections and fan sections at college athletics and what people say, do, throw, etc at targeted individuals. Just remember - we don't ever want to be an example of what is wrong!

SI.com - Writers - Grant Wahl: Vulgarity and taunting by college basketball fans. How much is too much? - Tuesday February 26, 2008 12:02PM

A little taunting for on court shenanigans is fine. Making it personal and outside of the court is rediculous. Death threats should not be treating lightly and the law should get involved. Unreal how some folks take these things.

Leave the family out of it, seriously.

I think J.J. Redick received some of the worst I've heard. There were a lot of death threats and wishing his mom would die and other horrible things.

I remember a Duke-NC State game from a couple years ago. A duke fan had a sign that said "Redick is Ridiculous". One of the NC State Fans held up a sign right behind the person that said "ly gay" The ESPN camera did a shot of the crowd and the two signs side by side with one another looked like it said Redick is Ridiculously Gay. I remember ESPN had to apologize after that.

Speaking of that, major props to the student last night who had the sign reading something along the lines of "We hate Hawks, especially Jay ones"...hillarious.

You might only want to give props to the guy in the Maryland shirt - a Dukie is holding the first sign...

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Re: SI.com: Student/Fan Actions at Games

This stuff has been going on for years. I remember when a Maryland forward by the name of Veal was brought up on some kind of rape charge, and then got off. When he played at Duke and he was introduced the students rained the floor with woman's panties..

Or back in my day when Steve Stipanovich shot himself in the foot, the rumor was he was contemplating suicide , and the gun went off too soon. When he showed up at Hilton the students had toy guns making shooting sounds right behind the bench. Norm Stewart got so ****** he got behind the bench and screamed "Leave him the hell alone." To which the students respond F.U Norm go coach your team.

The only reason it seems a bigger problem now is because of internet, you tube, ESPN & Fox sports broadcasting thousands of games. Not to mention cell phone access.

Not saying its right, just saying the problem is not a recent one.

You failed to mention the Pierre Pierce situation and the "No Means No" signs and chants.

Re: SI.com: Student/Fan Actions at Games

Taunting and being cruel = Okay.

Obscenities and Crude behavior = Not Okay.

Why do you suppose it is that during the peak of "Hilton Magic", no-one shouted "You Suck" after the 5 clap? How come "Don't know the words" didn't get twisted into an obscenity-ridden "tradition" until after Hilton Magic became dead?

It takes a little creativity and panache to heckle and taunt an opponent to literal tears, (which is what we ALL want, don't we?) without using profanity. But any knuckle-dragging a-hole can scream obscenities or make personal comments about sexual orientation or family tragedies.

Having attended games during the peak of Hilton Magic, it shames me that we, as fans, fall back on profanity and crude behavior. Contrast this with the actions of "Flag Guy" and "Superfan".
