    Grabbing the Rim

At one point in the first half (everyone who was at the game will remember because the crowd boo'ed for 10 minutes), a KU defender fouled Jiri and grabbed the rim (or it appeared he did from my rooftop seats in Hilton). Shouldn't that have been goaltending and/or a technical foul?

What did it look like on TV and what did the announcers say about it? Was it the right call? McDermott seemed pretty worked up.

    Re: Grabbing the Rim

Announcers called goal tend. I agree with them. Just add it into the basket with the 3 pointer during free throws. I was more dissapointed with Jiri missing both free throws though.

    Re: Grabbing the Rim

The announcers said it should be goal tending, and that Kansas got a break. They also said that since it's so clear cut, it should be reviewable so that the officials can get the call right.

    Re: Grabbing the Rim

Yes, it was a very obvious missed call. Looked like he hit the rim going up, then grabbed it and pulled it down. How in the world 3 officials could miss that is beyond me. Of course, those guys were missing a lot last night, so it shouldn't surprise me. At least they didn't knock down a 3 in between Jiri's free throws.

ISU - it is a no no and the Jiri is out.
OPPONENT - hang all you want, you are KU and McD All Americans. Shake the rim, bend it, twist it, you are KU.

    Re: Grabbing the Rim

Jiri "hung" on the rim during the Tech game so he didn't land on his head and the refs reviewed that to determine if it was a technical foul. Yet these guys didn't even think about reviewing the call last night? Gotta love the officiating consistancy in the Big 12...

I believe the goaltend was in the second half. But yes it was awful that the refs didn't call it. Pathetic.

That was making me go crazy too because thats what the announcers said they were doing, when they were really reviewing a 3-pointer to see if we were behind the line.

slightly off course.... but similar team and hose job. Is there video of the phantom 3 in 2004? I have the Big12 story... but someone has to have the video as I am unable to find it.

I was afraid that they'd call a fould on Bryan Peterson while this happened, but it seems like they're over him.

Watching all the stuff that referees miss this year has made me start thinking that maybe pro wrestling is true, and the referees really do just get confused, and lost control of things

Agreed. It was confusing though, but the review was for the 3.

    Re: Grabbing the Rim

The play where Thompson was pushed out of bounds and they didn't call a foul was pretty questionable too. Think at one point in the game there was 7 minutes left in the first half and only 2 total fouls called, both against us. Think there were only 4 total fouls in the first half yet in the 2nd both teams got into the bonus I believe. Very inconsistent calls last night. Not the difference in the game but we can't even get a home court call anymore it seems like. The Texas game I believe was another this year we got hosed several times too. One of these days I'l love to see Mac walk up to the ref, take the refs whistle and examine it and ask if it's still working. That'd never happen and you'd probably get T'd up for it but would be a good way to make a point!

My favorite part on the broadcast was when they cut to the big, goateed fan right after the grabbing of the rim, and although there was no audio, he clearly incredulously said, "You gotta be ******* me!!"

Yes, thought that was funny as well. My wife and I were laughing.
