    Carpet purchase

We're going put new carpeting in our house, top to bottom. We went shopping the other day and there are just hundreds of styles, designs and different levels of quality. Mind numbing. If anybody has any suggestions of stores, brands, quality, padding, etc it would be appreciated. Something else to consider is we're looking to stay in the house no more than 5 years. It's just gross and would need to be changed it help sell it too. What style is considered trendy? We don't want to put something in that's become archaic.

Well he said they were only going to be there about 5 years. If it was a lifetime then you DEFINITELY go with the orange shag!

This is absolutely correct - neutral helps people not focus on it where a drastic color can turn a person's opinion fast (knowing they automatically have to put money into carpet they'd like). If you're going to do it for resale 3-5 years down the road, you need to spend the money on good padding, quality carpet so it doesn't look 3-5 years worn, or you're going to replace it again or take a hit to your sale price because people won't want it or want the money take off so they can replace it.

    Re: Carpet purchase

I would put down premo pad in high traffic regions especially on steps - for walking better and for avoiding wear.

Mrs B of NFM fame said to my friend she would give him a better deal than the advertised price. She calculated it in her head. Made him feel real good until he realized she knocked a penny a yard off. She had a fine mind at 98 years of age.

    Re: Carpet purchase

We got ours a couple years back at Nebraska Furniture Mart in DSM. They haggled pretty well on the price, got a thicker pad and such.

And the installation was done very well and on time. No hangups.

We got both the berber on the stairs and one room, and a frieze (??) in the other two rooms. Can recommend both, although the frieze does look matted down from time to time.

Thanks for all the input. Haggling on the price, huh. Interesting. We've been looking at Lowe's and Home Depot and didn't even consider trying to talk them down on pricing and/or upgrades. How common is it trying to deviate from the listed prices when purchasing carpet?

I heard you can go on Craig's List and find it. They'll tell you how much per hour and where to meet.

Redeker's in Boone has a lot of selection - and it's not as expensive as you would think. They also deliver around most of central Iowa. Plus, it's supporting local business.

    Re: Carpet purchase

I'm a sales guy so I always have time to shop for products. When we finished our basement I shopped at every carpet store in town. We picked out a frizzee as well because of our pets and kids. The carpet is wound really tight so it doesn't show wear as much as others. I ended up at NFM who gave me the best price. I still was able to haggle another 10% off which they called "contractor pricing" and got 6 months financing. They contracted Monahans to install it and we are very pleased. I sold carpet back in the day and there is a ton of markup in it especially if you find a roll that they have in stock. It pays to shop if you have time. My wife on the other hand will go somewhere and buy something on the spot if she thinks the price is fair. I would venture to say there was a $1200 difference between high and low bids so it was worth shopping around to me.
