Gee Whiz Stats for the Big 12

Most interesting items from a informative Texas article: http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/colleges/15739635.htm

1 -- Passing touchdown by Colorado in its new spread offense, the most glaring reason why the Buffaloes (0-6, 0-2) are riding a 10-game losing streak.

5 -- Unconventional touchdowns scored by Kansas State (4-2, 1-1), four by special teams and one on a fumble return. The Wildcats' offense has produced only 10 TDs, suggesting that any opponent that makes K-State score in a traditional manner should be in good shape for a victory.

14 -- Fewer plays per game, on average, in league games this season because of the NCAA's new clock rules. That means winning teams must strike early instead of relying on fourth-quarter comebacks.

150 -- Rushing yards per game by Oklahoma tailback Adrian Peterson, a figure that probably needs to increase if the Sooners (3-2, 0-1) are to resurface in the hunt for a BCS bowl berth.

378 -- Yards per game given up by the Iowa State defense, a league high. That explains why the Cyclones (3-3, 0-2) are one loss from becoming irrelevant in the Big 12 title chase despite a productive offense.

DFW PROJECTION - Oklahoma 35, Iowa State 24: The Cyclones become the first projected front-runner to disappear from the Big 12 title chase.

    Same story in San Jose:

Everybody in the nation will think it's the defense, stupid. It is not as simple, as we have not given up the big plays on defense. More likely, it is the number of point scored recently.

Re: Gee Whiz Stats for the Big 12

    THE ANSWER -

Iowa State will play its fifth straight ranked opponent when the Cyclones visit No. 23 Oklahoma on Saturday. Iowa State lost to Iowa, Texas and Nebraska and beat NCAA Division I-AA power Northern Iowa 28-27. "We're battling the computer," coach Dan McCarney said. "We don't cry. We don't complain. We don't make excuses. There is no perfect schedule for any of us as we go through the Big 12 Conference."

Re: Gee Whiz Stats for the Big 12

NO BOWEN SIGHTINGS FOR DEFENSIVE PLAYER (you have to win the game before your are considered apparently):

Big 12 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:
Prince's emphasis led Kansas State to its first Big 12 win under the first-year head coach, a 31-27 decision over Oklahoma State on Saturday. The Wildcats scored one touchdown on Daniel Gonzalez's 21-yard return of a blocked punt and another on a 95-yard kickoff return by freshman Leon Patton, who was named the league's special teams player of the week.
Joining Patton as the Big 12's players of the week are Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee on offense and Ross on defense.

McGee, a sophomore, led two 80-yard, fourth-quarter scoring drives for the Aggies in a 21-18 win over Kansas and finished 25-of-40 passing for 240 yards with no interceptions. Ross, a senior, returned the Oklahoma lateral 3 yards for a Texas touchdown and also had two interceptions to end Oklahoma's final two drives.

Re: Gee Whiz Stats for the Big 12

    AP Story about his Dad:
    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/sport...n9723198.shtml

It was 1998 when Nelson went in the joint. Adrian was 12. Talk to each separately and they each have the same memory of one of their last times together. It was a youth football tournament in Orlando, Fla.
"I still remember like it was yesterday," Nelson said.
So why did he do it? Because life had owed him, and he wasn't going to let a bad-luck bad leg keep him away from the big money. The 42-inch vert went away, but the sense of entitlement didn't.

Re: Gee Whiz Stats for the Big 12

The good news for Oklahoma is that Peterson will be going up against the worst run defense in the Big 12. Opponents have rushed for 145.8 yards per game against Iowa State (3-3, 0-2) this season, including 251 by Nebraska last Saturday as the Cyclones lost 28-14.

Iowa State has failed to score more than 17 points in any of its three games against teams from major conferences - all losses to ranked opponents. The Cyclones have been outscored 92-45 in those contests.

Re: Gee Whiz Stats for the Big 12

Believe we can improve on the 378 yards per game. Oklahoma has nine turnovers in five games so there is hope. Paul Thomas is a credible passer, but I think our linebackers can contain AP to the outside better than people think. Ne is not Brett Autodealer Bomarr. The rush up the middle will be the question. Oklahoma will get no more than 350 yards in total offense, a point where we have a chance.

Re: Gee Whiz Stats for the Big 12

Gee whiz, ESPN stat about the game on Saturday against Oklahoma say we give up 146 yards a game rushing, the worst in the Big 12.

New motto: We may be worse, but we try harder. (aka Avis).
