ESPN's thoughts on Big 12 spring

Rundown of all Big 12 teams, summarizing what to expect out of spring ball:

ESPN - Quarterback stability, coaching changes key to Big 12 spring practices - College Football

    Iowa State Cyclones
    Spring practice starts: March 25
    Spring game: April 19
    What to watch
After early struggles, the Cyclones responded to coach Gene Chizik as the season progressed. His development this spring will build on that steady late growth.
Austen Arnaud has the inside track to replace Bret Meyer at QB. Redshirt freshman Taylor Bennett and Phillip Bates will also get some work this spring, but it would be a shock if Arnaud doesn't claim the job.
Chizik made his bones as an aggressive defensive coordinator, but he will be challenged finding replacements for starting defensive tackles Athyba Rubin and Bryce Braaksma and linebackers Alvin Bowen and Jon Banks.

Nothing overtly negative, just the facts, IMO.

Taylor Bennet? I thought there was no way he was even in the running.

Re: ESPN's thoughts on Big 12 spring

He doesn't...but it does sound better to an outsider than just seeing one guy contending w/ Arnaud.

Hopefully Bennett can stick around like Nate Mechaelsen did and help the scout team for four more years. He's a good kid who works hard, but I just don't see him ever beating out Arnaud, Bates, or Tiller.

Re: ESPN's thoughts on Big 12 spring

It could be a case where ESPN looked at our roster just to find another quarterback on the depth chart to put in that sentence. I'd be surprised if they put much effort into doing any real research for a four-sentence quip.

He probably doesn't, they just through his name in there because he was on the roster.

Bennett is transferring to a small school so he can play.

That's not good if true. Will he stay around for spring ball so there is more then 2 QB's there?

    Bummer.

The guys I know have told me that he and Mechaelsen, along with the rest of the scout team offense, were a huge part of improving the D last year. Wasn't starter material, but definitely an asset in practice. Hope they can pull in someone to fill in there.

I have no clue if he will stay around for spring or if he is already gone. I just know that he will be transferring. We will have Araund, Bates, Tiller and Brent Bueker (walk-on freshman). We will be fine at QB.

That would be hard to get a Scout team guy. Of course, I imagine Tiller will get some reps there. Still, its a pretty hard sell. 'hey, wanna come in here so you can get creamed by our first team defense every day?'

Bueker? Anyone know anything about him?

I was thinking of before Tiller and Bueker would get here. If Arnaud or Bates got hurt in spring, not good, we would only have 1 QB for practice and the spring game.
