ISU MBB Next Year: Better or Worse?

I'm interested to hear what everybody thinks about next year's outlook. Consider Wesley being healthy, losing Jiri and Rahshon, returning players, and incoming recruits and vote.

I think pretty much everyone is optimistic here... We will be better next year.

Plus I don't think anyone wants to think about being worse!

Better. Has to be. Better guard play and another year in McD's system

Re: ISU MBB Next Year: Better or Worse?

Poll? BTW, I am going to say slightly improved, a bubble team. It really all depends on which guys step up to fill the void that Rahshon and Jiri leave. Wes has the size and quickness to become a defensive stopper, and Rahshon needs to bulk up. But, I'm going to say 3-5 games better.

Re: ISU MBB Next Year: Better or Worse?

Same. We will have better guard play, but I don't know who will play center and get rebounds etc... Jiri and Clark seem to be our only rebounding guys. Hopefully wes comes back better than ever. CB will be better I guess. I am seeing 15-20 wins next year.

Can't get much worse sometimes....we play even with teams and just can't finish.

I think we need to go to the 3 guard lineup next year. With Diante, Buckley and Lucca all playing guard. Then you have Craig and Wesley playing the forward spots. We don't need a center.

I think we could see that a lot but we really need Craig to step up a lot for us to be successful. I'm a big fan/defender of him but he's going to have to find his inner meanness if we can go with a smaller/quicker lineup like that. I think Wesley will be stronger, quicker, sharper and the guards will be much better overall but we're still going to be incredibly young and unproven/untested. At a very early guess I would say 16-19 wins but we could do several games better if everything falls into place. I still don't see us finishing above 5th in the conference at best but also think we should be above 8th.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

I thought 16-19 before this year, and IMO Jiri has been our best player in conference play. Clark adds a needed dimension. I just don't see us being that much better. We're going to be below .500 again this year, probably by several games. If we're already throwing out the "youth" thing we're in for another long year. Thompson, Petey, Haluska, and Wesley will be upperclassman.

Honestly, we aren't that young, and we aren't that good.

Re: ISU MBB Next Year: Better or Worse?

We are losing 2 studs but Wes, Craig, DG, BP, Haluska, CJ,LEE, Boozer will all be one year more experienced and improved as well as adding more strength and knowledge of the offense and defense. We will also add Lucca, Wes E, Mann, Hamilton, Buckley and maybe a few more recruits this will add more dimension and more depth what we needed this year. I can't see why we wouldn't be better than this year.

Re: ISU MBB Next Year: Better or Worse?

I'm an optimist. Larry was 15-15 his first year, with everyone thinking it was only going to get worse. He managed to keep the team he had together and add a few significant additions. This lead to a basketball boom. I've seen Mac do more with less, and I believe this team is poised to break out... that is assuming the team is held together and we continue to add talent that is at least as good as it is replacing... So.. I'm an optimist. I always will be!

"I think that people are responding to someone standing up and saying this is what we want to do and let's not be afraid to go for it,'' Pollard said. "I think Iowa State has a very conservative, modest background. We never pound our chest and say `Let's do it.' It's OK to set a goal. You can't do it if you don't say what you want to do. You should be proud of it.''

Re: ISU MBB Next Year: Better or Worse?

I think next year should be better overall, but I am not sure how much. I think a lot depends on Brackins, Cory Johnson, and expecially AT. If AT and Cory can step up and (between the 2 of them) make up for atleast the rebounds that we lose with the departure of Jiri, I think we will be NIT bound (maybe a bubble team). If they don't, people will just pound it inside and crush us.

I think we have the opposite problem next year than this year. We will have a ton of guards, but we don't have a proven big yet. If one of the bigs steps up, we will be solid, if not, it will be this year all over again.

Re: ISU MBB Next Year: Better or Worse?

NIT is a realistic goal for next year. Anything more is a pipe dream.

Does it bother anyone else that over the last two years we are 4-17 on the road?

Re: ISU MBB Next Year: Better or Worse?

I think we'll be better next year but in large part because the rest of the league won't be as strong as this year (depending on who leaves early).
