Bought a new car last week

A few weeks back someone was asking about small sport utility vehicles. The wife decided that it was time for her to get something new so we went shopping.

We had test drove a Honda CRV a few months ago and she really liked it so it had the lead.

We also test drove or looked at:

    Mazda CX-7
    Saturn Vue
    Nissan Rogue

Keep in mind that we had a bias for Honda since we've owned 5 of them.
The base CX-7 had a crap interior so we didn't even drive it.

The CRV was typical Honda, solid but nothing too exciting.

The Vue was a big surprise. We drove the V6 and it was very nice.

The Rogue is the vehicle we went with. For the money (28K sticker) the Rogue had a lot of cool features the other vehicles didn't have available. Little things like integrated bluetooth and every thing is keyless. It drove very nice and gets pretty good gas mileage.

If anyone ever needs to buy a Nissan in the Des Moines area let me know because we had a great salesman. I had bought a 350Z back in 2003 and had never been back to the dealership since. Five years later my wife and I walk in and our salesman walks up to me and knows my name. I've bought and sold 20+ cars (I have issues) and he's been the best I've had. Before I bought from this guy I checked around at some other dealerships and did the basic research on price. He came back with a stupid number at first but got me down to a number that I thought was fair very quickly.

Now that she got her toy, what should I get.....................

Re: Bought a new car last week

My neighbor just bought a car from Hummel's. He said that one of the owner's is Perry Hummel who wrestled for Iowa State in the seventies. He also told me that the wrestling coaches from Iowa State bought there cars there. Maybe, I could get a good deal, if I trade my F150 in. The gas mileage on my truck is killing me.

I bought my last car from Hummels too. I forget the salesman, I did not spend more than 10 min in there. Knew what I wanted, just went in there, made an offer, they wanted to haggle, I said no, they accepted and I left. It was great. I highly recommend them.

Interesting... We're going to be buying a new vehicle in the next couple of months and are looking mostly at small SUVs. We've pretty much decided on a RAV4, but now you've piqued my interest with the Rogue. Did you ever consider the RAV4 and what sold you the most about the Rogue? (Esp. comparing the other vehicles) And how do you like the CVT tranny? Edmunds knocked that a bit... Lastly, how's the interior space compared to the competitors?

I helped my mother pick out a RAV4 up in the Waterloo are. This is her second one and she loves it. You don't even want to know why my wife didn't want to look at the RAV4.........She doesn't like the tire on the back. I know it's stupid but I'd never hear the end of it if she bought it so we didn't even look at it. When looking at the RAV4 with my mother the only thing I didn't love was the interior. I liked the CRV interior better than the RAV4. The big plus on the RAV4 is the V6 that's available.

The CVT is weird the first few times you drive it but you get used to it. Once you're up to speed it's runs at low RPM's and is very quiet.

Interior room is very close on the CRV, Rogue, and RAV4. Probably not worth mentioning.

If you're buying strictly on reliability I would say the Honda and Toyota are your best bet since this Rogue is a new model. The good thing is that the CVT and the motor have both been used before in other nissan models. In reality there was not a lot of difference between the 3 besides the interior and my wife preferred the the Rogue.

He must sell a ton of cars. When I was there he was working with 3 people at the same time and all the other salespeople were twiddling their thumbs.

My wife has said the exact same thing about the RAV4, she doesn't like the rear end look of it.

She likes the spare tire on the back of Jeeps/etc, but she hates the molded in tire carrier on the RAV4, she says it has an ugly butt.

If you are looking for a toy, I would look at trying to find a used 911, a couple years old (no reason to pay the sticker when you get the same car with 30K miles for 1/2 of the MRSP). I tested drove one this fall and it was scary fast.

Appreciate your input. My wife doesn't have issues with the spare, so that's not a stumbling block. I'll definitely take a hard look at the Rogue now. Always good to have options...

I'm thinking more along the lines of a new motorcycle. 1/4 the price of a decent sports car and a lot more performance. My mind was set on a certain motorcycle (used Triumph Speed Triple) but it got sold a few weeks ago.

I do love the Porsche though.
