    giggity giggity goo...Jackpot

Looks like Japan is getting after it.
Downloads up to 1.2Gb per second? Wonder what that would cost? Could you imagine that?
You could download and fill an average hard Drive in minutes.

Just more proof that the world is taking off without us. Regulations and greed seem to keep us behind in alot of things.

I guess there would have to be mulitple sites upgraded to even come close to that kind of speed though. At our Company we have 2 - 10 Mb Internet pipes, each for different things so there is a pretty good bottle neck. Still amazing to think what the world will be like in 5 years.

Cable and telephone companies would have to upgrade all of their systems. I feel like telephone companies are being the most agressive with it while cable seems to just sit around.

    Re: giggity giggity goo...Jackpot

That's actually pretty slow. Plus latency will be horrible which means that any sort of throughput would likely be horrible. That's the downside to satellite internet. It'll be handy out in the sticks though.

1.2 Gb/s is about .15 GB/s, so you're moving about 9GB/minute (actually somewhat less than that, but it gets quite complicated).

Now that's assuming your computer can keep up (and the other end of the circuit can keep up).

Most high demand sites sit behind HUGE pipes, and are spread all over the world. 10Gb interconnects are pretty much the standard now, and a site like yahoo or google would be sitting behind dozens of those.

We use 10gbps ethernet at work, you pretty much cannot saturate it past like 600mbps from one server even if is a huge $10,000 quad core machine. The only way to saturate that kind of bandwith is multimillion dollar disk arrays. But it would be nice to be able to download at home as fast as your pc could receive.

Well not with one machine. A single host won't be able to even get to 1gbps for any reasonable amount of time. Those super high-speed networks are designed to carry thousands and thousands of computer's worth of data.

I work with a bunch of Japanese guys, and they talk about speeds of 50-100 Meg/s for about $30.

It's way easier to wire up a country when it's as dense as Japan. There is WAY more money to be made in a square mile in Japan than pretty much anywhere in the US. We keep up pretty well in the states, all things considered.
