    2007 Offensive Line

I know we're just 1/2 way through the '06 season, but I'm starting to worry about next year already. If this year's veteran offensive line with 4 seniors is struggling so much, how much worse will it be next year?

Here's what next year's line-up could be on the line:
Left Tackle: Lee Tibbs, 6-4, 325, Jr.
Left Guard: Reggie Stephens, 6-4, 320, Fr.# (I hope he can switch from RG)
    Center: Bastian Schober, 6-2, 315, Jr.#
    Right Guard: Tom Schmeling, 6-3, 290, So.#
    Right Tackle: John Tjaden, 6-7, 305, Jr.#

As of now, this is our only OL commit for next year:
    Grant Garner
Offensive center - Mesquite (TX) North Mesquite
    Ht: 6-foot-3; Wt: 260 lbs

    Here's the recruits from '06:
    Matt Hulbert - 6-7 - 274
    Ahtyba Rubin - 6-3 - 285 (Already playing D-line)
    Lee Tibbs - 6-4 - 325
    Jose Vargas - 6-3 - 320

Am I missing any young studs already in the program? (I basically retrieved my info from the depth chart)

Anyone else slightly concerned? (Especially considering how Cotton hasn't really been developing the line like we'd hoped)

At least I have seen some of these guys going in the games this year, so it won't be much but there will be some experience. The "development" of these seniors is pretty terrible so far. I would rate Hicks as the best pass blocker on the team. Those are their ages this year and not next, correct?

Yeah - those are this year's numbers. We could have 3 seniors next year with very limited experience. I hope Mac & Barney hit the JUCO trail this winter and grab a gem or two who can make an immediate impact. Shouldn't be too hard to recruit ; )

    Re: 2007 Offensive Line

What happened to the O-line from when ISU had like 8 straight years of a 1,000 yard back? Now we couldn't even block 4 chickens if they lined up against us (too much speed). I thought barney cotton was supposed to develop the O-line even futher and make them unstopable but since he has come in our O-line has been terrible. As far as next year, we will probably be some where between this years line and last years line.

    Re: 2007 Offensive Line

Yes, be very, very worried! If you we think this year is bad, oh baby we haven't seen anything yet! We won't be able to run the ball next year and Meyer is going to be running for his life. Having senior skill players (e.g. Meyer, Blythe) next year isn't going to do us any good because of our OL.

We might as well lump next year into this year, because it is not gonig to get any better. Seneca Wallace couldn't do anything with a mediocre line his senior year, so are not shiny looking. I am not looking forward to the next 18 months of football. Our defense last year diguised the inadequacies of our offense last year by constantly getting turnovers and giving us great field position. Hey at least basketball season starts soon...

    Re: 2007 Offensive Line

A couple other guys to look out for (although they are likely backups) are Jordan Good, Landon Streit and the walk-on Pat Steinbach.

I know it doesn't look good, but you need to have some faith in the players in the system. It's hard to do in our current situation.

Schmelling has held his own at guard. Stephens looks the part and hopefully will be ready to step in next year. It's tough for a JUCO to come in and start, so Tibbs should be comfortable in the system by next year.

Tjaden and Schober are two guys who've been in the system a long time, and next year will be their last go-around. Maybe they'll step up as seniors and play some inspired ball.

Just taking the glass 1/4 full aproach.

    Re: 2007 Offensive Line

What about John Neal's brother (Patrick Neal, I think) from Valley?

EDIT: Nevermind. He is on the D-Line.

    Re: 2007 Offensive Line

Its hard to have faith that the line is developing because of the lack of sucess there year for years now. If the line we currently have isn't any good, its hard to have faith that next years will be any good....

    Re: 2007 Offensive Line

My main point is that a good O-Line isn't necessarily filled big-name star players. A good offensive line is a single unit that works together and is comfortable and can depend on the player lining up next to him.

Apparently we are looking at some JUCO OL talent for next year, thanks to our friends at isuisu.com.

Good, lets get a bunch of juco's in here. I'm sure Mac has a plan. Barney has been a bust. It's time to clean house.

    Re: 2007 Offensive Line

Yeah, it's a big concern. I thought Cotton would have had this line playing better by now. Perhaps too much responsibility for him between o-line coach and offensive coordinator. Or mayb we've just had too many busts.

Next year will be a big test on Cotton or whoever has the Cyclone offensive line.
