Arrow Amzaing stat regarding ISU's Big XII wins

Amzaing stat regarding ISU's Big XII wins

I'm throwing this out there for debate so don't say I'm just throwing out a stat that reflects poorly on the coaching staff. I just think this is an amazing stat that I wouldn't have realized had it not been posted. I don't have time to research the stats from the pre-McCarney era so this post is lopsided but not by design. If somebody else has time to research what we did before Mac, feel free to post it here.

    Steve Deace researched the following...

"Under Dan McCarney the Cyclones have won 28 conference games, yet only two of them came against teams that finished the season with a winning record (Texas Tech in 2002 and Colorado in 2005). By my count, ISU is 2-47 against conference teams that finished the season with a winning record under Dan McCarney."

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Yikes! Pretty much shows how lucky Mac & the 'Clones have been that the North was down so much in the past 5 years or so. Otherwise, he would have been out on the street years ago!

Re: Amzaing stat regarding ISU's Big XII wins

I don't know if colorado really fits in there. They have lost like 8 or 9 games in a row since they visted Jack Trice. So that really only leaves one win over a team with a winning record in the B12 at the end of the season. Yeah, this stat alone tells me its time to move on. DMac has a 4% winning average against teams that finish the B12 with a winning record. Thanks for everything Dan but its time to move on.

The stat I'd like to see is:
How many teams have beaten us with a worse or losing record for the season?

Re: Amzaing stat regarding ISU's Big XII wins

McCarney does not have the coaching ability to defeat a team who has better talent than ISU, purely on X's and O's. When we beat Iowa, that was all about emotion, in my opinion.

What is our record against teams we SHOULD beat then? It must be decent.

In my opinion, we were 7-5 against teams we should have beat last year.

2002 4 4 Kansas, Nebraska, Texas Tech, Missouri
    2003 0 8

Re: Amzaing stat regarding ISU's Big XII wins

thunderdave, your post says it all. 5 years of being in the basement. Then with the exception of 2003, we have 5 years of mediocrity. Even our mediocrity is really sub-par compared to other "mediocre" teams like Mizzou and Texas A&M.

Another thing to consider is that in each of the "good" years except for 2002, ISU didn't play Oklahoma, Texas, or Texas Tech. Also, to say that 2002 was good year is a stretch. If ISU would have had to play Texas and OK in 2000, which was arguably our best year, ISU wouldn't have even gone to a bowl game.

You guys must be smoking some bad weed if you think this is mediocre.

This is way above mediocre according to Mac. Thank goodness we've never fallen to a level that he thinks is mediocre.

    In addition...

ISU has started conference play for the last 3 seasons in a row...0-3. This coming weekend...should we lose...would make it 4 straight. :(

A sign of a program that still has much work left to be done. We've come a long way from the 90's...but a long way still to go.

    I did some quick research on this. The first five seasons (95-99) we lost to 8 teams with losing records: 95' Mizzou (3-8), 96' OK State (5-6), 96' Baylor (4-7), 96' Kansas (4-7), 97' Kansas (5-6), 97' Colorado (5-6), 98' Oklahoma (5-6), 99' Kansas.

Over the next six seasons we have done better against bad teams dropping only 4 to teams that finished the year with losing records: 03' Colorado (5-7), 03' Kansas (6-7), 04' Mizzou (5-6), this one really hurt.

    Actually the stat should read:
ISU is 2-46 against conference teams that finished the season with a winning OR even (.500) conference record.

The more I think about this, the more ill I become.

It'll be alright, we'll start a suicide watch list pretty soon to make sure everybody makes it through the Fall:)

Remember that was before Stoops when Oklahoma was pretty down. Texas wasn't what they are now either. The Power was in the north with Nebraska and K-State. We gave Nebraska a run but got railroaded by the Cats 56-10.

Still I don't think we should take anyting away from that team. Talent wise they have been better in ISU history, but those guys really wanted to win, and beat some more talented teams through sheer willpower. We also had Steve Loney calling the plays.
