    I hate sprained ankles!

Thought I had given myself plenty of time over the last 4 weeks since I sprained my ankle....b4 I decided to play league bball again. Nope! Tweaked it pretty good again tonite.

So, here I sit typing with one hand and an ice bag in the other. Anybody else have trouble with ankles? Any advice?

Yup. I've sprained my left ankle so many times playing basketball that the tendons are basically permanently stretched and loose. I wear a brace whenever I play now. The best kind I've found is the lace-up kind. They look something like this:

You should be able to find one at any good sporting goods store.

BvK, you've got to quit making so much sense because I "must spread some rep around" before giving more to you.

they're better than sprained knees, so that's a plus. I played my first game since hurting my knee in early Jan tonight as well, though I made it out without reinjury.

in college I had one of those lace up braces for an ankle that seemed to work pretty well. though a friend of mine eventually had to have surgery to shorten the tendons (or ligaments? not an anatomy buff) in his ankles because they rolled so easily. he said every time you roll your ankle its a little easier to roll it the next time.

    Good luck with it.

I hated my sprained knee. It was such a pain. I got it back in my prime during high school and I just wanted to play some baseball. After two weeks I decided to go out and test it. BAD idea, sprained it even more and I was out for another month. The good thing is thats the worse injury I have ever had.

so its normal for it still to be sore after about 5 weeks? I'm able to run in a straight line easily, its the stopping or cutting that doesn't seem to be there yet. How long did it take yours to fully heal?

    Re: I hate sprained ankles!

I also had a sprained knee. Mine occurred during a HS football game early in my senior year season. Went out for a few plays, then came back and played the rest of the game. I must have stayed loose enough that it didn't bother me bad enough to stay out. After the game was a different story. It swelled some and I couldn't put very much weight on it for about a week. I wore a knee brace for the rest of the season but didn't end up missing any playing time besides a few practices, but it was definitely bothersome whenever I played.

Like one of my teammates tonite said, "once it rains, it pours". I have seen those lace-up supporters before and think I will give it a try. Thanks for the input. Its almost like the floor we were playing on had too much grip on it, cause there was no give, it just grabs you....probably better off on a floor with less grip.

It took about 7 weeks for me to be at a complete 100%. But at about 5 weeks I was around 85% healthy. So ya I would say thats normal. Just don't over do it and sprain it again.

Must be one of those 'high ankle' sprains? I am pretty lucky with mine, I usually heal up within a week. Of course I pretty much do nothing as far as movement and use some ice.

Yes, get those lace-up "booties". They're well worth it...seriously. Don't seem like much, but they help a ton.

was is a recycled rubber floor? Like the 'Rec in Ames? I saw more rolled ankles on that floor due the the "better" grip, once you plant your foot isn't going anywhere ... I guess its pluses and minuses because the rubber does seem to be gentler on the knees.

I believe it is one of those floors......shoot, I can't have this cutting into my beer-league softball schedule!

Well of course taping is ideal, but how many people know how to do this correctly? Not many.

Sure, you can follow a video or diagram - but it takes a lot of practice to get it done right. A bad taping job can be worse than no tape/brace.
