How Much Is Your Time Worth???

So, the last few days I have read alot of posts and threads that got me thinking, how much is your time worth? I know I have had chances to take higher paying jobs that would require more hours and turned them down. This after I actually took a lower paying job that was alot more hours (they told me it wasn't going to be). Anyhow, I love having a steady, flexible 40 hours a week and I can't see myself ever taking a job where I would work more than 50. I firmly beleive you work to live, not live to work...

    Anyone else?

WOW, you picked the wrong place to ask people about how they use their time!

    I share a similar view.

However, I'll bust my tail and sacrafice a lot in order to get to where I want to be. A few years back, both the wife and I worked full-time and part-time jobs and went to school "full-time" at night. All while we were planning our wedding. We even bought our first house in the thick of all that. To say it was hell would be putting it mildly.

Yet, it got us ahead in some aspects and afforded us a number of opportunities. I'd do it again easily, even though we both hated it. And, we were more efficient with our time than ever before. Both of us operate much better when busy and with a little stress.

A HS teacher of mine, who happened to be my favorite all-time teacher, said to us often "Pay me now or pay me later - your choice".

In the end, we all have to "pay" at some point and most of the time, the sooner you pay, the better. The longer you put it off, the more "interest" you're faced with.

There will probably be another period or two in my life where I put myself through hell - but it'll only be to achieve a goal that will reap us benefits.

My time is worth a lot - and I just moved jobs recently to a competing firm for more money and the same amount of hours. But as you gain experience and expertice in your field, you're always going to be more responsible for more aspects, and thus put as much or more time into the job as you did at the beginning. I think it's a balance - and at the same time, I AVERAGE around 55 hours per week, but get paid greatly to do that work. I don't mind it...I love what I do.

Wow. This is a tough question. Some weeks I work around 40-50 hours while other weeks I'll be pushing 60-80 hours a week. It all depends what job I'm on. I love what I'm doing so I don't mind it. The only thing that sucks is that when I'm working about 80 hours a week, bills tend to get unpaid. House gets trashed. Dog gets neglected. I don't log on to the Fanatic. And I lose about 20 pounds. I earn a decent amount of money but when I break it down to an hourly wage, it doesn't seem like a whole lot.

Exactly - when I have deadlines, all of this happens. Life does become a big catch up on the weekend, using the one day of the weekend I'm not in the office...

As they say, time is money. I value my time more than anything (relatively speaking). Got to have a life and living life is more satisfying than working life.

That's all fine and true.. that is until the dem's are elected and start rasing taxes. It won't matter how much you work then...

    JUST KIDDING!!!!

"I think that people are responding to someone standing up and saying this is what we want to do and let's not be afraid to go for it,'' Pollard said. "I think Iowa State has a very conservative, modest background. We never pound our chest and say `Let's do it.' It's OK to set a goal. You can't do it if you don't say what you want to do. You should be proud of it.''

Depends. If I'm at work it is worth a specific $ amount. If I'm with my family, it's priceless.

Re: How Much Is Your Time Worth???

Thankfully I work a 40 hour a week job with rare overtime. I agree though, any more than 50, even 50 on a consistent basis possibly is too much. I enjoy doing things other than working and if work began to consistently take away my leisure time then I'd definately considering finding something else. Especially some day when I have a family, I don't want to be missing my kids events all the time because I have to stay late at work. There has to be a point where your personal life comes before work I think.

Perfectly happy with where I am at professionally. Could take the next step, but pay wouldn't change my life and would involve lots more travel and headaches. Content where I am at for now.

Re: How Much Is Your Time Worth???

I think it will vary a lot over a persons life. Sometimes the job demands increase and if you want to move forward you have to step up. Family sometimes requires more attention too. Prior to a year ago I didnt think much of staying at work until 6 or 7 but now that I have a little boy to go home to that has changed. If I am at work until seven he will be sound asleep when I get home and an hour or two of work is not worth that, at least not regularly.

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.
