Slippery slope my friends....why can't a private business owner decide for themselve's who'd they'd like to establish his/her's establishment.

The reason or loophole for this case is employee safety.

Cooney's and Charlie's Filling Station are two bars in the Des Moines Metro that are prime examples of what can happen to non-smokers who are constantly exposed to second hand smoke. (both owners developed health issues due to 2nd hand smoke, both are now smoke-free)

In those cases it was the owner making the decision, but what about the employees in other establishments?

I totally agree. Each private business should have a choice. Let it be a business decision.

Re: Smoking ban passes the house.

This is my first post and its kind of weird that I'm not posting it about the Cyclones. My parents own a bar in Clinton and personally I think that this will cost them customers. And for the state to give exemptions to casinos is unheard of. I am not trying to start a debate or anything but seriously just because a couple of casinos generate a lot of money for the state. I want to know just how much money all of the taverns generate for the state.

I agree, this is flat-out the height of hypocrisy. "We need to fight indoor pollution, and second-hand smoke." "BUT WAIT! WE CAN'T HURT THE CASINOS!" Man, I HATE Iowa politicians.

The arrogance of the Iowa's elected officials is off of the charts. Let's review:
    1. Private business must adhere to our (Gov't) standards
    2. We (Gov't) will adhere to our own standards - Casino exemption
    3. We will use your money to promote our cause - 600K in taxpayer dollars spent by the Iowa Department of Public Health to promote legislation
Either ban tobacco completely if it is so terrible or quit adjusting laws to get as much money out of taxpayers as possible.

Re: Smoking ban passes the house.

Exactly, choose to smoke or not, it's not my decision to make for you. Just don't tell me I can't in a private establishment that allows me to. I'm not asking to go into your child's bedroom and light up, nor would I in my house, but don't tell me, name you generic bar here, I can't when they don't care. You have a choice to frequent that establishment or not as do I. This hurts their business as well as those who specialize in catering to non-smokers.

The best argument that can be (and was by a well funded casino lobby) in favor of the casino exception is the fact that such a ban would not be able to effect the Mesquaki casino, thus leaving the others at a competitive disadvantage. Personally I think its a line of bull because Mesquaki is already voluntarily taking a big hit by being alcohol free, and I could see them following the state's lead with regards to smoking if it was banned by their competitors.

For the same reason they can't decide to ignore OSHA regulations.
