    Wireless Service

I switched from Nextel to Verizon about a year ago because I went from needing service in big cities to needing service everywhere, especially rural Iowa. I also went from dropping one call every other month to dropping one call every other hour. I can be standing still with a full signal and it will drop the call arbitrarily.

Has anyone had this kind of experience? I am open to suggestions for a new service provider for Blackberry or even another device with online/email access.

    Re: Wireless Service

I don't think there is a single wireless provider in Iowa I have not heard something bad about. But I know the worst in the Cedar Rapids area is Iowa Wireless/Cingular. They have bad dropped calls problems in this area for whatever reason.

    Re: Wireless Service

I don't have many problems with dropped calls. But it seems to me that strength ( or just plain service) is very hit and miss with Verizon.

I live in the heart of WDM and have a very weak signal at my house. Up the street is ok, work is usually fine.

My in-laws live out by the airport, and I constantly lose signal out there. The people at the store say it's because of the radar and such.....

So I'm less than impressed with the "Best network in the country". But once I have a connected call - I rarely have a drop.

PS - when my contract is up, I don't think I'll be renewing.

I also have Verizon. I've never had a problem with them wherever I go.

Also, you can update your phone to get the latest towers and such through verizon. I did this once when I was in Oklahoma because it wasn't getting reception. I think it's *68 or something like that. I can't remember so maybe someone else knows what I'm talking about.

*228 - didn't know that. Rep for you.

    Optimize Verizon Wireless Roaming Capability
You can optimize your cell phone service and assure access to the most current communication towers by updating the roaming service on your Verizon Wireless phone. IS&T recommends that you do this update at least once a month.
Note: Older cell phones may not have access to this feature.

    To update your roaming service:

From your cell phone, enter *228 and press SEND (this is a free call).
Result: The display reads Programming in Progress.

Listen to the prompts. At the prompt, "Press 2 to upgrade your phone's roaming capabilities", press 2.

When the upgrade is complete, you will hear a confirmation message: "Your phone has been programmed successfully. Thank you for calling Verizon Wireless." This will be followed by 3 beeps.

Depending on which phone you have, either the phone will reset itself, or you will need to click Done or some other key stroke, to end the programming, after which the update is complete.

I've had good luck with Verizon. Maybe you just have a bad phone? I know 1 thing is that I will NEVER go back to US Cellular.

My experience with US Cellular - not good. Nextel - outstanding. Cingular - fair, but that was seven years ago.

Try Osceola and south toward KC...if you are using Verizon digital it does not work. Unless they have update their system lately. Same goes for travelling east on I-80 toward that other university town.

I have Verizon with a Palm Smartphone (digital signal only) and have experienced problems as mentioned.

    Re: Wireless Service

Overall I have had good luck with Verizon. The trouble is usuallyless than the trouble I have heard with Sprint and ATT (Whoever they are this year). I do consistently drop calls in an area about halfway between Omaha and DSM on 80. I do know that some phones are better than others but its tough to trade out til you find a good one.

    Re: Wireless Service

I have noticed alot has to do with the phone. I had a sony ericsson awhile back with Cingular that absolutely sucked in part of wisconsin. Had a friend using a different Cingular phone in the same spot and it worked great.

    Re: Wireless Service

I've noticed that the phone you have seems to make a difference. A couple guys at work have Razors with Verizon and they get worse reception than my LG. I'll have them try the *228 to see if its the towers but I've had no problems.
