    Spring Practice Questions

All right. With a lot of uncertainty going into spring, I thought that we could make a list of some of the questions, and check back on them later.

    In no particular order:

    1. The offensive line was better, but still had room for improvement. Will Dedrick and Lamaak be stronger? Who steps up at RG? Will center be improved? Does Joe Blaes step up somewhere? And what about those redshirts, like Baysinger, Klerekoper, Alvarez and Osemele?

    2. The biggest mystery might be the d-line. Kurtis Taylor is an anchor, but needs help. Parker and Lyle are bundles of potential, but need to perform, much like Travis Ferguson. Where does redshirt Kellman fit? Or Nick Frere? Inside, Black might be an anchor, but he has a long way to go to match Tuba. Will Bailey Johnson be beside him? Nate Frere has size and experience, but what of last year's jucos, Chris Weir and Michael Tate, are they ready to play?

    3. Tight End/Fullback is led by Derrick Catlett, but how much muscle has Collin Franklin put on? And can another walkon or two emerge as Howe did last year? Where is the depth?

    4. I really liked the athleticism of two particular guys when they signed, but both had knee injuries their senior seasons. Now, how will wideout Derron Montgomery and d-lineman Austin Alburtis perform? Either could be a major asset at their positions.

    5. The receiving corps takes a big hit with Blythe graduating, and Graham didn't qualify. Hamilton and Sumrall are a starting point. It'll be up to speedsters like Wallace Franklin and the aforementioned Montgomery to sieze opportunities. What do we see from Euseph Messiah or Houston Jones? Does Sandvig surprise? Has the long and lean Franklin put on some muscle?

    6. Does Chris Mahoski, as the sole remaining recruited kicker, show something? Three years removed from knee surgery, what does he have in the tank?

    7. What do Raven and Bibbs show as starters, and even moreso, what do youngsters like Cameron Bell, Curtiz Mathis and Anthony Green have to offer? Is A.J. Mathews a linebacker?

    8. Four scholarship corners makes for a thin spring. Are Bell, Singleton, McDowell and Sandvig bigger, as well as improved over last year? James Smith and Chris Brown were athletic, if undersized safeties last season. Has Brown put on some muscle? Are they healthy? Are Steve Johnson and Brandon Hunley, both upperclassmen now, ready for a leadership role in support?

    9. A-Rob is another player with a need for a few pounds. Is J.J. Bass's shoulder completely healed? Can Scales stay healthy? What of Jason Harris?

    10. Who returns punts and kickoffs? This is a mystery. With Carlson not reporting before summer, I'm drawing a blank here.

    11. Is Bo Williams worthy of all the hype that we've given him--completely without his asking for it? Do we get a flash of the future?

    12. Austen Arnaud has been anointed by many already, but he's not the only talented quarterback on the team. What does Phillip Bates have as a passer? Will he strongly challenge AA in the Spring, or at least prove a capable reserve?

So, what did I miss? And what am I wrong about?

    Check back in April.

Will the Sandvig's even be able to go for spring? Both tore their ACL's, and it didn't seem like that long ago.

Zac tore his ACL in the Nebraska Game and Alex tore his in the week's practice before the Nebraska Game. The Nebraska game was September 29th.

My bad, that will be like 6 months. I guess I thought it was later than that.

I bet there will be a few, but I don't think any are here for spring practice.

Exactly, which is why having some of the guys who have been around for a couple of years step up is so important.

It will be interesting to watch our linebackers and our punt return team.

    Re: Spring Practice Questions

Does Sedrick Johnson start as a frosh?
Which, if any, of the starters on the Oline last year will lose their spots this year?
Does Jason Harris stay at RB, or does he move back to safety, where he showed a ton of potential?
Has Wallace Franklin been able to add weight?
The linebacker shuffle, who plays where?

    Re: Spring Practice Questions

I hate to say it, but I wouldn't mind of someone played well enough to beat out Jesse Smith. He made occasional plays, but he's not the most athletic guy in the world, and Chizik's defense is predicated on speed--especially at linebacker.

Who do they put back for punt returner? Devin McDowell? Chris Singleton?

    Re: Spring Practice Questions

Smith had some great games, but he is not great in pass defense. Definitly earned that scholarship. But I wouldn't be surprised to see him sit during passing downs.

I bet Sandvig gets another shot as well, but I hope Carlson can come in and be a difference maker at the position in the fall.

    Re: Spring Practice Questions

Brown may lack size and the athleticism we really want at the safety position, but man - the kid can pack one helluva punch. He made some very important plays for us last fall in big spots.

We get just two wins instead of three without his play.

I was amazed that such a slender guy as Chris Brown was making such big tackles. I guess textbook form, determination and effort really are an asset. I'm really regretting that he'll finally be a senior.

That stuff of Albert Young at the line on the 3rd down against Iowa was epic by Brown.
