Spangler pinned Wilson in 2:40. Next up in the quarterfinals is Joe Waropay out of Normal (University). To the best of my knowledge, these two have not faced each other this year.

Spangler won his quarterfinal match by pin in 3:38. Next up in the semifinals is another highly touted wrestler and Illinois commit (former Iowa commit) Jordan Blanton.

Re: Update on Chris Spangler - ISU Wrestling Recruit - State Tournament

    from illinois matmen:

The match of the day, weekend, the year, and, in my book, the history of the IHSA took place at 171. It is a shame that Chris Spangler and Jordan Blanton could not have wrestled in the finals. Spangler came out “swinging” (not literally) and was aggressive immediately. He scored two takedowns quickly, followed by letting Blanton up. After letting Blanton up a second time, Spangler shot right back in with a hard double; Blanton scrambled; and Spangler scored a third takedown in less than two minutes. Blanton was not to be outdone, and he escaped in dramatic fashion at the end of the first period. It was 6-3. The second period began with Spangler cutting Blanton again. But, something had changed. Blanton was aggressive and began pushing the pace. It paid off when Blanton scored a takedown with 18 seconds left at the edge of the mat. Spangler scrambled and was awarded two for a reversal as time ran out, but the points were waived off after the referees conferred. The score was tied 6-6 going into the third period, and it was a match!
At one point, it looked like Spangler thought he was going to cruise to victory, but Blanton had other ideas. This time Blanton started a period cutting Spangler. After a bully double out of bounds, Blanton went up for the first time in the match. When they started back in, Blanton cut Spangler again to tie it back up 8-8. Spangler then shot on Blanton, but Blanton fought it off to a stalemate. They started back in the center, and the action finished out of bounds again at 1:06. Spangler was slow to come back to the center and was visibly tired. Blanton seemed ready to go like he was starting the match. Spangler took the initiative with another shot, but there not enough behind it, and Blanton spun behind for a go ahead takedown with 27 seconds to go. The place went crazy. Blanton rode Spangler out, who clearly did not have much gas left. In all my years of watching the State tournament I have never seen a standing ovation for a semifinal match, but there is always a first. Blanton won the match of the tournament, and to Spangler’s credit, he was gracious at the end.
