South Dakota May Allow Guns On Campus Should Iowa?

A measure allowing law-abiding people to carry guns on the campuses of South Dakota's public universities was approved Monday by the state House of Representatives.

The House voted 63-3 to send the measure to the Senate after supporters said allowing students, faculty members and others to carry guns would help deter mass shootings.

"The only remedy for a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," said Rep. Thomas Brunner, R-Nisland, the main sponsor of the bill.

HB1261 would prevent colleges and technical schools from restricting the right to carry or possess a firearm. Schools could require that guns kept in dormitories be stored in a locked gun safe.

Only one other state, Utah, authorizes weapons on college campuses.

Should other states follow the example of Utah and the direction of South Dakota and allow guns on campus?

Only problem is there are probably more bad guys than good guys on any given campus.

Good grief. What the hell are the legislators thinking? Allowing students and professors to have guns on a campus is dangerous (and stupid).

True, but the bad guys are more likely to have a gun whether they're allowed or not.

I gun in an untrained hand is no good. Maybe snipers in every classroom instead.

I don't think this would stop a nut from going on a mass shooting because they most of the time they are suicidal and kill themselves anyways. What do they care if someone else shoots them.

Keeping a gun in a locked safe does no good to stop a killer in a classroom. This law is ******** and just makes it easier for the killings to occur.

Re: South Dakota May Allow Guns On Campus Should Iowa?

I worked at SDSU for a couple years. This doesn't suprise me too much. Nearly everyone up there is a hunter, so everyone has guns. I think this is just a ploy to allow the students to have their hunting guns on campus.
There are a couple dorms there that have "Game rooms" in the basement.
And no, they aren't for pool and foosball.

And what about the people who carry guns and whip it out whenever they feel threatened. Or the folks who shoot first ask questions later. There is a reason we fund police. They have the training. I dont want some jackhole with a gun who happens to think someone is suspicious pulling the gun out and firing or threatening.

No it doesn't stop a nut.

What it does do is open the door for a modern rendition of the shootout at the O.K. Corral, when/if a nut does show up.

Probably more casualties in the crossfire.

I think this is a very good idea. Realistically, if that guy tried to shoot those people at NIU, he probably would of only shot 1 person before being shot himself. This is a very good idea. I wish ISU would do it.

Re: South Dakota May Allow Guns On Campus Should Iowa?

This kind of law just really pisses me off and I can't believe it passed almost unanimously. Can you imagine walking around campus not knowing who has a gun in their backpack and who doesn't?

My mom told me about this last week and she works for Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD. Apparently, this thing kind of flew under the radar and most people weren't even aware of it until it was too late - including her and nearly all of the other in-state campus officials and students that she knew... They made an attempt to right letters to their legistlators and get the word out, but it was too late....

I just really have a bad feeling about this.....

Why don't we just deputize everyone over the age of 18 and give them all guns to police the rest of society as they see fit. Then there would be no need for police departments. Also, while we're at it, let's get rid of the fire departments. All homeowners will be issued 100' of hose to connect to the closest fire hydrant so that they can fight their own fires should the need arise. Think of the tax breaks people!!

    (end sarcastic rant)

Re: South Dakota May Allow Guns On Campus Should Iowa?

The one or two incidents that might be stopped would be dwarfed by the number of idiots that would let some petty argument escalate into a gun fight or accidentally shoot somebody. No thanks. And I'm a gun owner.
