    Diante progressing, Brackins struggling

Brackins is really struggling in Big 12 play. He seems to have a very difficult time adjusting. What does Brackins need to do to start making some progress. I know he is a freshman, but 25-30%FG is really hurting us right now.

Meanwhile Diante is improving every game and will be very good in the future with some muscle.

I know post players take longer to develop, but what are some things that Craig can work on the most.

Shooting under pressure. Working the post. Hitting "easy" buckets!! Playing bigger than he is.

Definitely agree about Diante, he is progressing well.

    Re: Diante progressing, Brackins struggling

Not shying away from contact when he gets the ball in the post

Being able to turn over both the right and left shoulder

Setting his feet correctly on his jump shot

Footwork on the defensive end of the court

Passing when they double down on him in the post

    Boxing out on rebounds

Now for the good news...he is tremendously talented. His talent alone will make up for some of his flaws. He will also grow by leaps and bounds with a year to work on his game/lift

He needs to fake more. He goes up with the ball right away all the time whether a good shot or a bad shot. He needs to put more thought into his play.

Our team is at a world's low for team assists. That is an indicator.

Is it our inability to pass or to finish that is affecting our assist numbers? I am sure a little of both. I do know that our passes to the post have been poor all season

    Re: Diante progressing, Brackins struggling

I know it wasn't the intent of the post, but lets all take a deep breath on assessing a true freshman big man playing big minutes in the Big 12.

I haven't been this excited about a true freshman since (deep, deep breath) Adam Haluska. Did i just write that? Yeah. Guess i did. Reason being he has amazing talent, isn't afraid to keep chucking it, and is playing huge minutes as a true freshman. All the while having to shoulder a bigger load than most true blue chip freshman - many of whom have a deeper talent pool of Sophs-Seniors to take some pressure off and allow them to learn. As far as the parallel to AH above, i just remember digging the way the kid had no conscience and a ton of confidence right away - starting as a true freshman.

As far as Garrett goes, love the progress. Confidence @ PG = leadership. Giddyup.

    Re: Diante progressing, Brackins struggling

Coming from a guy in Cedar Falls who has seen some wasted basketball potential (in my opinion) up here, I just hope Brackins stays a hard worker. Up here we have Eric Coleman as some people might know and he is struggling and having a tougher year than he is accostomed to, many around him know him to be kind of a slacker when it comes to workouts and just falls back on his trememdous talent he was given. I am sure it doesn't help that he is blazin a lot and in the bars and clubs so much (hard for me to judge TOO much, bcuz I always see him there because I AM THERE, but yet again, I don't play collegiate ball either...)

I see Brackins as having even MORE potential than Coleman, bcuz he has a much better outside shot (Coleman has NO, and i mean NO 3-pt shot.) But EC can drive it and throw it down a lil better and is stronger on the boards. I think Craig can be more of a hustle guy and can be a guy who pushes people around instead of the other way around, I just hope nothing like a tiny slump will break his spirit and it'll motivate him to work even harder.

As for Diante, lovin' watchin a guard actually come around at Iowa State, it's felt like FOREVER that we haven't had confidence in handling the ball. Just need things to keep staying on track there and we will be FINE for quite some time (hey that's a good rhyme...ok i'll stop before I turn into Shooter McGavin...)

Let's keep our heads up Clones and get behind our fellow Cyclones, they need encourage now more than ever...

I would agree Diante has been really improving lately. I'm also excited about his future. I think once he consistantly finishes shots after penetration, his assists will become easier.

I think Craig has a lot to work on in the post. He needs to learn how to establish post position and develop a variety of post moves. Once he does that he needs to learn how to read the defense and when to use those post moves. He has the athletic ability to be a great player. I think he will get stronger and add some weight in the off season. McDermott is a good teacher and I'm confident that he will really develop in the years to come.

    Re: Diante progressing, Brackins struggling

I thought Craig played much stronger last night. Trying to pound the ball inside more, taking it strong on his dunks. He has the right idea, the shots just weren't falling. And if he is going to shoot outside, he needs to learn to take him time and get his feet set. Took a lot of off balanced shots.

I think Craig is about to turn the corner. He seems more confident, and he seems to be playing stronger. Diante is a great ball handler, and everything else is starting to come around for him as the game slows down.

I think you're right. He seemed much more certain, and made some real aggressive plays. Seems like learning just goes that way. We all get to watch, and see how close he is, but close is just not quite there. When he breaks through, it's going to be awesome!

I think one of the worst things that happened to Brackins was making those 8 3's against Baylor. Now he chucks up at least 2-3 bad 3s per game.

    Re: Diante progressing, Brackins struggling

I also love Diante's progress. I think part of his problems with finishing earlier in the season was that he was expecting more contact. It looked like everytime he went up for a shot inside he was anticipating contact way too early and would always throw it up too strong.
