    07-08 Recruiting Blend

*I wrote this a couple of days ago, but switching ISP's led to some connectivity issues. Looking forward to your thoughts.

07-08 Recruiting, A Two Year Blend

One of the test of whether a team has been successful recruiting is to explore how well two contiguous classes complement one another. After all, if a school draws raves for their running backs two years running, but signs no quality offensive linemen, at some point all of those running backs wonít do them much good now, will it? With that in mind, I thought Iíd take a look at ISUís last two classes blended, at least, the remainder of the frosh and redshirted sophs from the í07 signing class. This might give us an idea how well the Clones might be doing circa 2010.

    Dustin Land 5-11 200 RSo.

    K
    Grant Mahoney 5-10 190 Jr.
    Zach Guyer 6-3 190 Jr.

Of course there are uncertainties. I donít think Carter Bykowski will still be at tight end, and Iím not sure that Bates and Tiller will still both be quarterbacks. And there are other mild guessesólike Kellman and McDonough at tackle, and I scraped for safeties (which should give you an idea of next yearís recruiting priorities), especially with Darks listed on offense. And as far as Haughton, well, where does the proverbial 500 pound gorilla play? Wherever he wants to. The left, pass protecting tackle is an uncertainty, had Grant or King signed I might have penciled them in, and possibly Haughton will be there. But weíll see. Oh, and fullback is a blended tight end/fullback position that the staff hasnít labeled as a H-Back, but they may as well.

Now, í09 needs, based on the thin spots of these two classes:

    1. Rush End
    2. Free Safety
    3. Left Tackle
    4. Running Back
    5. Strongside End
    6. Linebacker(s)

Öand of course, across the board.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Darks at that FS spot either.

    Re: 07-08 Recruiting Blend

I seriously don't know what it is, but every time I see Cleyon Laing's name, I start hearing the voice of the Ladies' Man (Leon Phelps) in my head...

Uhh... my name ith Clee-on Laing... uh, no, I did not thay "wang," I thaid "Laing"... Anee-way, my name ith Clee-on Laing, but people call me the Ladies Man. I am the Dee-fenthive Tackle for thee Iowa Thtate Thyclones. There's nothing better staring down the quarterback, and when he looks at you, you give him a little wink. Then when he says "hutt, hutt," you knock the offenthive tackle on his ***, run after the quarterback like he's your long lost love, and then tackle the quarterback on the thweet, soft turf. And as you're getting up from such a thweet quarterback sacking, YOU STICK YOUR CLEAT UP HIS BUTT!!! Have you ever done that? I recommend sticking your cleat up a quarterback's butt. It's such a beautiful thing...

Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Either you forgot or think he'll have left early for the pro's, but otherwise, Austin Arnaud in his senior season will be starting QB in 2010.

    Cyclone
Iowa State became the Cyclones after they leveled Northwestern in 1895. As the Chicago Tribune (9/29/1895) noted:
    'Struck by a Cyclone
It Comes from Iowa and Devastates Evanston Town'

I think he is referring to the recruiting classes that came after AA. That is why he is not included.
