    Indianola People (and DMR haters)

As some of you know, Indianola won the CIML Conference Championship this past week. The Des Moines Register, however, did not think it necessary to include a story about the Indians in with the 11 articles posted for the non-winning teams.

I have e-mailed one of the authors of the sports page, and here is our exchange:

    > To Mr. Galleske
    >
    > In reading through the coverage of the CIML meet online, it appears that there
    > is one thing missing: who the winner was. Now, I don't have the paper copy of
    > the DMR, so maybe I'm missing something, but it would have been nice to see at
    > least one article posted online of who the winner of the overall meet was..
    >
    > If I'm missing something, I apologize, but I've spent the past 15 minutes
    > searching the sports section and the preps section, and could find nothing.
    >
    > It wasn't until I went to the Ames High School online scores that I discovered
    > my home town of Indianola defended their conference title.
    >
    > These things would be nice to know.
    >
    > Thanks,

    > Thank you for your response, I really appreciate it. I did put Indinaola
winning in the second line of the story. In your edition, it may have been cut
off due to space and deadline issues. But we do have the full length story on
the web, or I can send it to you if you'd wish. Please let me know if there is
anyway I can help you and thanks for your interest.
    >
    > Sincerely,
    > Jason Galleske

Yes, I would like it sent to me because I can't seem to find it anywhere on the
    website.

It also isn't a sufficient explanation that the winning team got cut out due to
space or deadline issues. Even if the whole story is online, it doesn't matter.
Space and deadlines didn't seem to affect the losing teams. Because they weren't
    Indianola.

I feel alienated by the way Indianola is skimmed over time and time again, and I
know others in the town do too. Just give us and our students the credit we deserve.

The 11 stories that were written had nothing to do with Indianola. There were for our zoned editions. Indianola has its own weekly paper. The Valley's, Roosevelt's, etc. of the world do not. If you'd like to further talk about this I can be reached at ***-**** (cell).

    Sincerely,
    Jason Galleske

Now, I know as it may be just a small thing, but I think we can all agree that the coverage in the register has gotten significantly worse as time goes on. Not just high school, but the same can be said for ISU, and yes, even Iowa coverage.

How much longer can we stand having a crappy paper being the main source of paper news in Central Iowa?

I am originally from Winterset and we were pretty much ignored by the dmr all the time. I realized that we were 30 min away but the dmr did sell papers there. I hadn't picked up a rag in over 5 years before last week. I was getting my oil changed and waiting in the lobby, picked up the piece of crap paper and was done reading it in about 5 min. Now it will probably be 5 more years.

Good headline to this thread. That pretty much gets everyone's attention because everyone hates the DMR

The Des Moines Register has poor coverage of all Warren County teams. They seem to slight Norwalk quite a bit too...

I just thought that his response about how Indianola has it's own paper was kind of funny. The Record Harold is no better/different than the Ames Tribune, yet they give quite a bit of coverage to Ames high school sports.

Same with Ankeny - I believe they have a paper as well.

Regardless, you'd think people in central Iowa would at least be interested to know who the winner was. Maybe just a headline that said, "Oh, by the way, Indianola won the meet."

haha Galleske used to write for the Newton Daily News a few years back and he was a terrible writer then. For some reason he got 'promoted' to the DMR and now Newton's sports section has gotten much better! From doing high school interviews with him, he doesnt seem like he's all there in the head.

Dude. that really is crap. Not even a blurb in the other 11 articles saying who won? like not even, "ankeny participated in the CIML meet, won by Indianola, and...." ?

The Ankeny paper is about 90% ads and 10% opinion. Not much else, but it's free so I don't complain. There is an Ankeny edition of the Rag though.

No sir. I searched each and every article, and the only time Indianola was mentioned was when that particular team that the article was about had a wrestler that beat an Indianola wrestler.

And, it's not just Indianola that gets slighted. Drake was getting little to no attention until this season, UNI rarely gets any news anymore, and they've rarely have any good news about the Big Two schools anymore.

That paper gets worse every day, and it's our only source for sports information in Central Iowa.

The register does poor job of covering any team besides the DSM team. Honestly its not a good sports section at all. Heck Iowa Basketball wasnt even on the front page of it Sunday, instead some story on how the DSM never produces and DI college basketball players. They have a good wrestling writer but they chose to bury those stories all the time.

SH - good job outta you on this. That excuse about other local papers is crap. Seems this guy got rather defensive - most notably in the 2nd response.

I love the "if you'd like to discuss further, call me" responses. Almost every time, they want to get into a "fight" with you, belittle you but don't want to do it in writing as it can come back to bite them in the rear. But a phone convo. can easily be a "he said, she said" thing.

Stick to your guns on this - the DMR screwed up (again) - period.

What I found "interesting" was when I was working in the Houston area, the Houston Chronicle had seemingly more coverage of the Cyclones and the rest of the Big VII teams than the rag had. Especially stories about players from Texas, of course.

Agreed. I would expand that to say that the Des Moines Register has poor coverage of everything that may be considered news.
