    Today is a banner day!

Write it down. Today, I agreed with Des Moines Register columnist Rekha Basu. Global warming is no longer an issue, because a very warm place just froze over.

The city of Des Moines is looking to regulate the "food vans" out of existence. Man, I do love my mobile Mexican food, and hope that they don't get kanked by the regulators at City Hall.

    Here's a link:

Basu: Curbing mobile vendors has downside for D.M. | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

For once, I have to say that Basu hits the nail on the head. The sayings "A stopped clock is right twice a day" and "The sun even shines on an old dog's butt once in awhile" seem apropros, right now.

By the way, does anyone else remember Norbert, the hot dog guy? Or the bagel cart on Welch? It seems the City of Ames tried as hard as they could to get rid of those guys, too.

I would never eat from one of those mexican in a van deals. But to each his own.

You have to try it just once - if you can block out the heath violations that are going on, it is hands down the best mexican meals I have ever had. At least with the ones in Houston. You get twice as much food for your money plus the flavor is to die for!

I am not sure which would be harder to overcome, the health violations or agreeing with Reka Basu.

I quit reading her column a long time ago. I discovered my day goes a lot better if her ridiculous thoughts aren't agitating me.

If you really want to get extremely good, sanitary, Mexican food, come to the town I live in, Columbus Junction in southeast Iowa. 70% of the downtown is owned by Hispanics, and we have 4 or 5 extremely good, authentic, mexican restaurants.

Speaking of a banner day... Did anyone catch the 2 page article about the missing dog?

They are giving a $5k reward for this miniature dog... And the guy is an Iowa Stars Hockey player.

Downtown Portland has a parking lot where food carts/huts are stationed permanently. The food is very good. I've never tried anything from the "food vans" in Des Moines.

I've tried the food from several of these venders around DSM. The food is as good if not better than most of the resturants we have here. I think it would be a shame if they actually forced these places to close down.

So if this ordanence does actually get passed, does it also apply to the farmers that sell sweat corn in parking lots and people selling fresh produce?? How about the farmer's market on Court Ave?

I bet it's more sanitary than most of the "real" mexican restaurants in town, and probably more sanitary than your average applebees.

People are far too squeamish about what they eat.

I miss Taqueria Los Amigos :( Used to have the best burritos in town, and it wasn't even close. I think they got a "real" store somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it.

Is Angel's still open? I was told the I-235 improvements would shut it down, but last time I was in Des Moines (2006) it still looked open to me. (Or at least as open as it usually looks).

That was some primo Mexican Food. And cheap, too!

Re: Today is a banner day!

These "Vans" can cook very good food. I regularly eat from these "vans" (catering trucks is what we call them) when I'm working. I find it funny that they use the term "vans" to make the reader think less of them. You'll see them all over LA, especially in the film industry. If these "vans" are good enough for the Hollywood Stars in the tabloids, why can't they be good enough for the people in Des Moines?
