With even a semblance of consistency on defense, and even a no-more-than-adequate offensive effort, Nebraska should be roll up a convincing victory. If not, chill winds will blow across the Cornhusker state, regardless of the weather.

The Cornhuskers, who haven't won the Big 12 North since 1999, are also aware how close Iowa State has come to a division title in each of the past two seasons. That's why this game has been earmarked as a pivotal matchup in the division race.
``We've struggled with the teams we've played so far,'' Iowa State wide receiver Jon Davis said. ``We know we can do a lot better than we have, and coming up and having this long stretch of seven games (in the Big 12), we know that if we do that against any of those teams it can be even worse. We've got to pick things up.''

"From working with him those years at Wisconsin - I know he'll have something for us," said Callahan, whose 4-1 Cornhuskers face the 3-2 Cyclones at 7 p.m. in a game televised regionally by ABC.
"You sound like our fans," said McCarney, who was on Barry Alvarez's Wisconsin staff with Callahan from 1990-94.

"We're not going to go with the 2-minute drill all day long - but we seem to be really good and efficient when there's not a lot of time on the clock."

Callahan said. "I thought our kids adapted well to the grass in Los Angeles. I wanted to make sure we got back out on the grass and adapted before we go to Ames this weekend."

"How you focus and how you prepare, that's the key when you get ready for a game like this. Practice (and) preparation becomes game-time reality," said coach Bill Callahan in his press conference Tuesday.

“They were running some nakeds and throwing behind guys,” Bradley said. “That has nothing to do with the speed of the player. It’s the positioning and the patience of the guy in coverage.”
As for the running game, Bradley said the Huskers “definitely” weren’t getting beaten at the point of attack. Many of Kansas’ runs, he noted, were cutbacks, when defenders were not disciplined in their gaps.

Husker senior center Kurt Mann will make the trip to Ames with the team but it's not certain if he'll play. He continues to recover from mononucleosis and returned to practice just this week.

"We're going to try to score 50 points. But we have confidence in our defense. A shootout is fun for the fans and players," Taylor said.

“Even as a player you feel like after beating UNI by one in games we should have won by more, Toledo and UNLV, it almost does not feel like we won the games, but we won and we are 3–2. It is a lot better than being 0–5,” said Iowa State quarterback Bret Meyer.

``They know we're capable of playing better. They've got to play better. And yet, we've still found ways to win games,'' McCarney said.

“We always want sacks,” Callahan said. “That will be a key emphasis this week. We have to put pressure on this guy. It’s going to be important that we pick up our production in that area.”
Nebraska gave up passes of 26, 30, 40, 40 and 46 yards and a run of 41 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball is where the Huskers have shown sings of stress this season, although that isn't evident in the 15.4 ppg they are allowing. Still, the unit is giving up 321.0 total ypg, including 198.4 ypg through the air. What has helped the defense compensate for some of those yards surrendered is big plays, as Nebraska has forced 13 turnovers thus far.

For the Big Red schedule-maker somehow pulled from the heap three teams — Louisiana Tech, Nicholls State and Troy — that made some of us believe Nebraska was ready to make the jump to the NFC East.

If Nebraska again plays poorly and loses to an ordinary Iowa State squad, it’s fair to begin to wonder about Callahan and company.

The nicest thing you can say about the Nebraska "D" is that it's opportunistic. It's also about the only nice thing. The Huskers rank 14th among Division I-A schools in turnover margin (plus-1 per game).

They're also 59th in rushing defense (122.6 yards per game), 65th in passing yards allowed (198.4) and 92nd in sacks (1.4 per game). Senior defensive end Adam Carriker, who helped the Big Red notch a best-in-the-nation 50 team sacks last year, has just one this season, in the season opener against Louisiana Tech.

Re: Clone-Red Primer: One Stop Shop

The smaller number of sacks is a real surprise since the front four was back and three of the games were againsty weak opponents at Memorial. Sounds like Bill ewants to prove a point about his team's ability to get more sacks. Bill can be stubborn at times, so watch out Bret.
