How do you feel about star rankings?

We all can't help but awe over a 5 star recruiting in some way shape or form. Overall, how do people feel about them? I personally could care less about them.

I think they are nice to have to give a fan a perspective on a potential recruit, but as youve said I dont really care either.. look at what non-star recruits can do

Option #2 for me. When you look at schools who year in and year out are in the MNC hunt or are BCS bowl bound, they year in and year out have top 5, top 10 recruiting classes.

agreed - the big schools hit enough of the highest talent to stay at the highest level. thus stars has somewhat of an influence on everything

Re: How do you feel about star rankings?

I find it silly when people get that much more excited for a 4 star vs a 3 star....

    like in SJs case...

4 star on Rivals 3 star on Scout.

    makes no sense...

I don't know. Notre Dame has had a Top 10 class 3 years in a row now. How many wins has that translated into?

Re: How do you feel about star rankings?

I think the star system is overrated. While a lot of them live up to the hype, often times it's the 2 and 3 star kid who hasn't yet peaked, and will do so at the collegiate level. Not saying I wouldn't take a class full of 4 and 5 stars though.

Re: How do you feel about star rankings?

I would also look at the 2002 (?) recruiting class where we had something like 3-4 4 stars in our class. How many of those panned out?

well, two bcs games, then last year's disaster... remember that all of their talent is still learning to win (75% of their team last year were players with 2 or less years on the college gridiron)

but, i digress - i'll take the two bcs games :)

Re: How do you feel about star rankings?

If we landed 10 five star recruits, would we be saying these kids are not really that good, the star system is really over-rated???

Let's be realistic guys- our 2 star guys are OK, just OK.

    Here's how I feel

STARS MATTER. Is it an exact science? No. And on that note, we can all put the Blake Larsen analogy to bed. OLD news but thanks DM Register. You win with talent. Coaching helps some. This class that we put together is solely saved by the rb that transferred and a couple others that are good - allegedly - otherwise it is poor. I'm not saying the kids are poor but the totality of the class is 63rd in the nation. There are 66 BCS conference schools!

Oh, but Iowa is 53rd! So what. Even more embarrassing for them. Thank god we didn't give our coach $3 mil/year.

Will our recruiting get better? Maybe. We have to win on the field to get momentum in recruiting. It is clear from this class that going into a kids house and telling them "well we need talent and you can play right away" doesn't work. It didn't work.

Go and look at the top 10 or 25 teams' recruiting classes and our mountain is obvious. The rich do get richer. Those little stars matter because while it may only be a star difference that can translate into a step faster or a juke better or a fingertip closer. That wins games.

I'll be sending in my season ticket renewal in a a few weeks and I'll cheer the Cyclones on as I have for several decades. However, let none of us be surprised by the final score of some of our games. You can call me a naysayer or whatever you choose - but when I see someone grading Chizik's first class as a B (on this site), I have to wonder what grade 64, 65, and 66 BCS coaches got.

Re: How do you feel about star rankings?

I think everyone gets a little too excited about the stars and ratings. Sure it would be great to have a top 25 class, but it just isn't going to happen at ISU after a loosing season. GC got the best athletes that he could and he will try to develop them into a winning team. Quite frankly, the difference between the 35th class and the 65th is not that great. A couple of guys not making the grade from the 35th class would drop it a couple of dozen position.

Re: How do you feel about star rankings?

The 4 and 5 star players are usually easy to label. Your percent chance of getting them to pan out to be good is usually high.

There is relatively small difference between 1-2-3 star players.

What? Meaning we don't want them? If we don't get them, the stars don't mean anything. If we do and they wash out, we should not have wasted our time. Michigan just signed 17 4-star recruits today. I'll take that.

I just don't see the point in not being honest with oneself about the reality of our recruits.

In the end, even if the product isn't that much better, at least our uniforms won't suck. Baby steps.
