    compact SUVs

My car has finally bit the dust after 191,000 good times.

We're trying to car shop in the blizzard (not easy) and are starting to look at some compact SUV types: Kia Sorento, Ford Escape, Tracker type rides.

I'd like to get low miles and low prices not and easy coupling.

It would mainly be used by my wife ... but I may find myself riding in it from time to time and I'm 6'4" so little cars suck. You should have seen me folded into our Kia Rio rental car last week - it was like a circus show

Anybody have an opinion on what to get?

some starter questions: Do I need 4WD? Does it kill resale not to have it? opinions on the 4 cyclinder verses the 6 on the Escapes specifically ... does the extra power radically hurt the mpg?

I'm looking for under 60K miles

    Re: compact SUVs

Not on your list - but we have an '04 Subaru Forrester. Take it on all the trips, mileage beats the hell out of my Dakota.

I'm about 6' 4" and fit comforatably in it. All wheel drive is nice. My only real complaint is that the back seat is a little tight if you want to put the seat down for more cargo room. You have to move the fronts up, put the seat down, and back again. No biggie, can just be a pain.

That, and the lighter outlets don't have power when the car is off. So charging phones and that type of stuff is a no-go. Again, no biggie - just a pain.

Ours is also the 4 Cyl - no problems. Gets up and goes pretty well.

Not sure if we'll keep it should kids come into the picture. We've had a baby seat in it and your back seat is essentially gone and extremely crowded.

Also - in the just shy of 4 years we've had it, only one semi-major trip to the shop for a replacement alternator. Other than that, been pretty reliable. (just jinxed myself, I'm sure)

We're on our 3rd Nissan product and absolutely love it. Not a single notable problem with any of them to date. I'd highly recommend taking a look at their products - I think the Rogue would be in the class that you're looking at.

What is your price range? That will help narrow things down greatly.

We have a Nissan Murano, drives quite nice. If you don't want to spend as much check out the Nissan Rouge. It's a more compact SUV.

    Re: compact SUVs

I just bought a 2003 ford escape xlt with 69,000 miles for 12,250. Pretty good suv. if i could have afforded it I would have bought a Honda CRV instead or a toyota Rav 4. I wasnt very impressed with test driving the jeep liberty though. Just test drive a bunch and see what you like.

Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are also both good options. I've also heard GM's new fleet of compacts, especially GMC Acadia, is scoring high ratings.

don't want to go over 13,500 including (t,t,& l) if I can help it.

I like Toyota and Honda from a distance ... but I can't tie up too much money in this.

Seems like 2003-2006 is our range depending on accessories, mileage, motor size and 4WD verses 2

4 wheel drive just gets you alittle futher away from home before you go in the ditch.

    Re: compact SUVs

My fiancee drives the escape that i mentioned earlier. and she loves it. cant be happier with the way it feels and drives. But if 13500 is your max the Honda CRV is not gonnna work. Look at Escapes. The dealer had our escape listed at 15900 and we got it for 12250 with a free oil change and a full tank of gas

    Re: compact SUVs

I bought my honda CRV with 35000 miles on it for around 13k. It was a 2000. Thing does awesome and I love it. We hope to get another one here at some point. The realtime AWD kicks butt.

Nice, I looked forever and couldnt find a CRV for anywhere close to that. Our Escape is really good as well.

Be sure to appraise the vehicle at edmunds.com and then offer less than what they are telling you as it is definitely a buyer's market.
