When will the Luck Turn for the Mens Basketball Program??

I was thinking today about all the bad things that have happened to the Mens Basketball team since the end of the 05-06 season. If just one of two of these things go ISU's way this program is way a head of where it is today.

Negative thing that have happened since the last game on 2006

    1. ISU not invited to post season play.
    2. DI Scheduling mess
    3. T Carr says he is transfering
    4. W Blalock enters NBA draft
    5. C Stinson enters NBA draft
    6. W Morgan Fired
    7. W Morgan holds a PC saying he did nothing wrong with all his players present
    8. W Morgan helps team members find new team??
    9. F Degand decides to transfer
    10. M. Evanovich transfers
    11. P.A. Stinnet Decommits
    12. L Westbrock Decommits
    13. S Taggard transfers
    14. Staff loses out on S. Hannah because it is not know what Blalock's status is.
    15. Jiri H gets in trouble for driving a POS car with an U of I bumper sticker
    16. R Marsden get sicks
    17. 2006-2007 ends
    18. C McIntosh transfers
    19. D Dunson transfers
    20. R Marsden leave team
    21. M Taylor is kicked off team
    22. Lucca does not get through the NCAA clearinghouse
    23. Jiri breaks a bone in his foot
    24. W Johnson gets hurt
    25. M Brister leaves the team
    26. C Vette leaves the team
    27. Lucca get screwed by the NCAA
    28. Lucca still is screwed by the NCAA
    29. W Johnson injured again

I think that covers it. If a few things would go ISU's way maybe we would see different results. Its kind of scary to look at all those negative things.

    Great post.
I'd say one of the only good things, was getting Brackins to come to ISU.

    There are other good things
    1. G McD is a great coach and will get it right
    2. Lucca coming and saying at ISU
    3. W Johnson
    4. DG
    5. The class of 08 will be a good a good one
    6. Clark staying

I am sure there are others

First of all, I think we have seen the beginning of the end of the chaos.

Second, what truly amazes me is that in spite of all of that, we are still able to put out a team that can compete (somewhat) in the Big 12.

I think that says a lot about coach McDermott and the players that are left.

have to take two steps backwards to take one step forward, and in most cases it seems like iowa state takes about 5 jumps backwards and a couple baby steps forward..

It has never been proven, but I have always felt Morgan counseled the players to leave ISU so the new coach would not be successful. If Carr had stayed, and Blalok had signed with an agent the day Morgan got fired, this program would look a lot different right now.

Morgan was well liked by his players so who knows. Despite all those things this team is in most games. Like I said above if a few things go McD's way things would (will) be a lot different.

Let's face it, McD has also been pretty lucky to get something of a program changer in Wesley VERY late. The luck has gone both ways however it's been mostly bad so far.

Eventually the excuses have to stop and I think next year is that time.

Re: When will the Luck Turn for the Mens Basketball Program??

That just shows how resiliant the current staff and players are. After all of that, and we can still compete in the Big 12 (we had a couple of good wins before WJ went down again) is why I was getting so upset when people were calling for GMac's head early in pre-season. It takes a great coach to hold things together and keep the program afloat when adversity strikes, and I for one, think GMac should be applauded for his efforts, not called out when we a lose a game or two.

I still think that Morgan got the shaft. He was an awesome recruiter and when you look at SOME of the guys he had/brought in, most of them weren't huge prospects. Stinson chose Iowa State over Drexel. Tasheed Carr chose the Clones over LaSalle. He did bring in some studs--recruited Blalock (yes I know Eustachy was the coach when Blalock was being recruited but it was Morgan who acutally recruited him using his East Coast ties), Cory Johnson, Rahshon Clark, Shawn Taggart, etc. I think he should have gotten more than 3 years to put something together.

Morgan was a good recruiter but probably not the best coach. A lot of the guys he brought in had a lot of off the court issues along with big egos and I think Morgan just kind of looked the other way instead really trying to teach character. Somehow or another "Hilton Magic" really began to deminish with him at the helm. Towards the end of his last year Hilton was pretty empty. I think McDermott is teaching good character along with a more fundamental style of basketball.

Morgan is an assistant coach, and should stay that way. He has shown an inability to do the little things necessary to be a head coach. I don't think he was well-organized; I think he lacked attention to detail; I think he was poor with the media; and I think he lacked overall control of the program. These are some of the reasons he was fired. He can recruit and build relationships with players...great attributes of an assistant coach.
