First of all , good luck in Iraq.

Second: Do you plan on taking the laptop with you when you deploy?

Personally, I'm an HP nut, so I'd go with the HP Pavillion dv9700t. But if you've got serious coin to spend, I'd recommend the HP Pavilion HDX or the Dell XPS.

Also, with you going to Iraq, I'd guess you're Army. If so, I'd check out this website:

    Army Small Computer Program

If not, I'd assume the other branches have similar programs.

I don't know anything about it but I've seen commercials for the Panasonic Toughbook. They might be kind of pricey.

    Re: laptop help

You may want to call Dell, HP, and Gateway(Acer) and tell them your situation. I helped a guy in a similar situation and they offered some free upgrades due the military deployment. Also, you may want to think about adding Accidental Damage Protection to the laptop. My understanding is that the elements over there can be hard on equipment. You should be able to easily get something under $1200.

    Re: laptop help

I'd stay away from Gateways - the quality is nowhere where it used to be. I've heard nothing but problems with them over the last several years, and they've also recently lost their Government contract (some due to reliability issues, some due to Dell).
