    Our guard play

I watched some of the Rider vs Siena game today and saw no fewer than 6 or 7 guards between the two teams that could have started for us. How far have we fallen when we, a team playing in one of the 2 or 3 best conferences in the nation, have to rely on Haluska, Lee, and Peterson (walk-ons). Along with Garrett, we do not have a single combo guard that can shoot the 3 and or dribble penetrate/create.

Is is painful to watch Peterson struggle against pressure, or Garrett walking the ball up the floor with under two minutes to go when we are down 9 so he can clank an uncontested 3. I don't understand how mid majors can make our guards look like inferior, nor can I stand to watch a bunch of no-name Nebraska guards take the game over down the stretch and beat ours in every phase of the game. Wesley Johnson or not - that is a team we should have beat with. With Rider or Siena's back-up guards, we would have!

I realize Taylor, Dunson, and McIntosh's departures left us shorthanded, but they too had their struggles on and off the court. What's the deal with our inability to land good guards? I pray that Buckley is good enough to start ahead of Peterson/Garrett.

    Re: Our guard play

Are we honestly going to have one of these threads every other week? Please, can we let GMac rebuild by recruiting instead of every week complaining about "how good it used to be?"

Year two of recruiting with one year of left-overs due to the late start. Add in Lucca ineligible and Mike Taylor getting the boot.

Year 2 folks. Next year will be better and the year after that better yet.

what evidence do we have to believe that McDermott can have success after two "down" seasons?? OH WAIT, yeah that's right, he's done it every place before.

people, it isn't as if there is no rhyme or reason to why we hired who we did for our head coach. McDermott was brought in because, we did not need or want a quick fix. we wanted improvement and stability. this stuff takes time, we cannot expect for him to come in and take us dancing right away. we have a very good chance of going to the NIT or who knows maybe we get hot in tourney time, but more than likely we will end up better this year than we did last. yes a loss to nebraska sucks, but it was on the road and minus our hottest player WJ. We knew this wasn't gonna be a smooth-sailing year, it has and will have its moments, but remember we all knew our program was not a "quick fix" so please stop going nuts. we ARE getting better overall as a program, and hey, it COULD be a lot worse.

GO CYCLONES! Get better soon Wes!

I'll second this post. Thanks for saying what I was thinking. I have probably watched parts of 100+ ball games this winter, and I have not seen poorer guard play than that exhibited by ISU yesterday. Whoever decided to take Garrett over Jacob Pullen screwed up!

As long as it takes. ISU has never been a consistent powerhouse so I dont exactly know where everyone gets their high exepctations from. There is a different attitude at ISU in athletics, a better attitude. It starts with an attitude. Now we just need to build on it.

    Re: Our guard play

I understand the people who are upset with out guard play, and I understand those who think we need to be patient. I go back-and-forth on this. My biggest thing is that it will now be once in the last eight years that we have qualified for the NCAA Tournament; that sucks for a proud basketball program.

It used to be Micheal Nurse-Kantrell Horton and Jamaal Tinsley and big 12 championships...Now its 3 walk ons that nobody wanted and another second division finish....

Is it any wonder that the fans and students are staying away from hilton coliseum!!

The way it used to be? That was a small run for a few years. We must all be forgetting the in between years of nothing. Until we get some stability in the program we wont see consistency or improvement. I think we are on our way to stability.

As do I. Our guard situation does get significantly better next year though. I expect Lucca to start at shooting guard and Wesley to move to the 3. Buckley and Eikmeier (sp?) should both see quality minutes. Combine those three players with another year of experience for all of our current guards and I don't see any way our guard play doesn't take a step forward next year.

    Re: Our guard play

The biggest thing that we will have next year is shooters.
It is tough to open up the dribble drive if the opponent doesn't have to respect the outside shot. So we run into teams packing in the middle, limiting the touches of the bigs, and cutting off drives to the basket. And they can do it because we don't have anyone on the perimeter that will make them pay for doing it.
    This should change next year.
