    First time in Hilton

So you might have seen it in another thread, but we decided it would be fun for everyone to share their first experience of Hilton...

My first recollection of Hilton was the 1996 team with Willoughby. I remember him hitting a 3 from about half-court with the shot clock running down after the ball was poked away. That was the loudest I'd ever heard anything at that point in my life!! Come to realize, Hilton definitely gets WAY louder at times!! haha

    Re: First time in Hilton

My first time in Hilton was for my brother's graduation. First game was against Oklahoma in 2003. Lost the game but had lots of fun.

99-00 I believe against Maryland Eastern-Shore, very fun time. The band was gone over break and there was some crazy Hawaiian music instead.

Barry Stevens and Iowa State versus CU.

we had seats up top but were able to move below, there were seats open in the parquet (*GASP*)... while we were going down the stairs the fans started chanting.. BARRY, BARRY BARRY... it was funny because my name is Kerry and it sounded like they wanted me to suit up and play. I was maybe 10-12 years old.

    Re: First time in Hilton

This will be a fun thread to read, but I'm dissapointed because I don't remeber my first time in Hilton. My parents took my brother and I to all of the games so Ican' remeber my "first". One thing my dad did teach me at those early games (pre-Johnny Orr) is that you vever leave early, no matter what. If you are a fan, you stick with your team, win or lose.

    Thanks Dad!

    Re: First time in Hilton

My first memory was back in the early 90's...probably in 92 or 93 going to watch Hoiberg, Meyer, Thigpen and Company and participating in chants of ...."HESTER! HESTER! HESTER!"

Greg Hester was the early 90's Skoglund.

Going to those games turned me into a ISU fan from a Iowa Fan.

    Re: First time in Hilton

Wow. I thought I was young.
I was born while my dad was in vet school so I have been going to games since birth.
Most memorable game was against OU in early 90s/late 80s. Billy Tubbs was a dick and ISU was down IIRC 17 points at halftime. Came out guns a blazin' in the second half and toward the end, Pippet had a behind the back save in front of the scorers bench to Thigpen who laid it in and the Clones won. That was some of the loudest times I ever remember Hilton. Got Skip McCoy's autograph after the game and thought I was pretty cool.

I remember some of those games on CTN, Gary Thompson would get a Hester watch going in some of the nonconference games. I don't think he scored a point until his senior year. One of the games I was at, his poster was in the program. Everyone knew who Heste was so it was pretty sweet.

    Re: First time in Hilton

My first time in Hilton was the first evening that it opened, back in 1971. I had just been hired as an usher and they had a kind of "grand opening" night where people were allowed in just to look around. My job that night was to stand on the lower level west end entrance and direct people to turn and go down the stairs to the arena floor.

One person that came thru that night was Tom O'Connor. He was the new 7 foot center for the basketball team. He was impressive to meet in person. Then I watched him play basketball. Not nearly as good as he should have been for his size.

Those first couple of years were great. Full houses every game. Team was not good at all but that really didn't matter.

Mid 70's. With Hercle Ivy on the floor shot clock never got below 20 and I think at the time they were experimenting with a 30 second shot clock.

My first game was when I cam to visit ISU. Lost to Texas A&M in OT. Very disappointing game.

    Re: First time in Hilton

I don't remember mine very clearly either. I was in 6th or 7th grade. Floyd's last season as head coach. Probably played Colorado or someone who wasn't very good.

Started attending games rather regularly in Eustachy's first couple years. I vividly remember many games from the magic 99-00 season. Enrolled at ISU in fall of 03 and missed only a handful of home games during my 4 fours.

    Re: First time in Hilton

First time at Hilton for me was when I participated in the Iowa State Science and Technology Fair.

After that, we laid the wood on some no-name team (I forget who).
