I just saw this. I can't believe in this day and age people will still fall for this sort of stuff, but I thought I would pass it along.

I can hear the voice of Butthead in my head: "Yeah, this is, uhhh, like the IRS, or something. I need your bank account #". Pretty sad, but you know some people will fall for it.

    Re: Warning about new scam...

I've been getting calls to refi my credit card debt. Usually I ignore them, but last week I got so fed up I finally played along.

They didn't ask for anything particular. Number of cards, total amount outstanding, highest interest rate. All of which I lied about.

So then the lady tells me that they can help, that I really don't need to do much and I won't receive any new cards or accounts as part of the deal.

So I say "that's great. how do you guys do this and what company are you?"

    click...

Should've kept my mouth shut and found out if the next question were CC numbers or SSN or something very telling.

My wife is a bank teller. You would be surprised what people will fall for. I heard this on Headline News last night and it didn't surprise me at all.

Not sure if your story checks out, but you seem honest.

I'll PM you with my SSN and Checking/Savings account numbers.

Tell me - where's Nigeriastan again? I'll hop on the next plane available and drop off the check personally...

    Re: Warning about new scam...

I've got a couple of these in my Yahoo! email which is what I use to sign up for anything so my personal email doesn't get all the spam. This is what anyone should get for thinking the IRS would actually do something like that:

    Re: Warning about new scam...

The devious bas#$ds erally do come up with some timely scams though don't they? To get on top of the tax refund deal that quick. You know that if you come up with things like this at the right time that you WILL trick enough people to get some unearned cash... If only they would turn all that brainpower toward a legitimate goal!

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.

I know. If these people put as much effort into legitimate jobs, they'd probably make more money!

Actually, no they wouldn't, and that's why they do these scams. However, they'd probably spend less time making sure that their soap on a rope is tied securely to their wrist...

Have you ever checked out the website of the guy that plays along with these scammers? It's hilarious (a little vulgar in areas, but still hilarious).

Not sure how to link but here's the address.
