    General thoughts on Baylor

What are everybody's general thoughts on the Baylor basketball team this season? IMO, and this isn't a knock on what they've done, I'm not sold on them yet. They've beaten one quality team (TAMU), a few decent teams, and lost to Oklahoma and Arkansas at home.

While what the Bears have done between this year and the last few years has been great, I'm not ready to pronounce them one of the better teams in the Big 12.

    Thoughts?

They have great guards but are pretty weak inside. Like most teams, it depends how they match up against different teams. I think KU will absolutely destroy them inside.

    They will wear down. Overrated.

Good team, sure bet to make NCAA tournament. It's not like they are elite by any means but definitely a great season in Waco.

I think you mean the beat 2 quality teams, they beat ISU as well.

I think they are good, by no means great. I think they could win 1 game in the NCAA tournament but no more possibly less.

    Re: General thoughts on Baylor

It seems that after their trials and tribulations from a few years ago & the hiring of Scott Drew, it seems they have gradually gotten better.

They may not be there yet, but they will definitely be a team to watch in the future.

I hope they do well, it's a neat story.

I have not watched 'em play too much though. Didn't get to see any of the ISU-Baylor game but I have watched parts of a couple other games.

    Re: General thoughts on Baylor

I'm kind of interested to see what the fan support will be like. That school has been so bad in so many sports (outside of baseball and WBB) for so long that it's got to be pretty tough getting fans motivated even during a season like this one.

    Re: General thoughts on Baylor

top 6 big 12 team. chance to beat anyone with a good shooting night especially with the constant rotation of 5 great guards. lack of a constant inside game will lead to some losses and keep us out of the top 3-4 teams.

A team really set up for tournament runs though with depth. 11 players average > 10 minutes. no one over 30. 5 players averaging >10 points (plus one at 9) If someone is having an off night, there's always someone else to go to.

The scary thing is that we haven't played a game all year where I would consider more than 2 guards had a good game by their potential.

We've built a good conference record off of mostly weaker teams (no offense intended), but the two away wins are huge for the program. Take note that we are undefeated at neutral or away sites for the year (Winthrop,ND, Wichita St, USC, southern, NU, aggy [arky was technically semi-home and played in dallas]) OU was a tough loss but there were a bunch of factors that played into that, Griffin's miraculous unexpected return, 72 hours after a 5OT marathon. I expected to be 2-3 after the first 5 games, so i can't be too upset.

next year was the year I pegged as a breakout year and had hoped for NIT this year. We only lose one starter and bringing in another possible 5 star forward out of houston. But now it would be a little disappointing to finish with less than 9 wins in the big 12, which should be enough given the strength of the conference as a whole.

UT will hopefully tell me more. We match up very very well with them. Both guard heavy teams, with a good PF but not much strength inside. We lost 3 games to them last year by a combined 10 points i think. DJ was pretty well bottled up, but that whole durant thing was kinda difficult for us. If we can go to the drum and have a good showing, there's no reason we can't be in the top 3. I have a bad feeling that KU and KSU will run away with it due to the divisional imbalance. aggy, baylor, texas and ou are all going to be beating each other up for those next spots (NU or ISU could definitely jump up there too). We control our destiny against all of those teams, that's all I can ask for now.

[/more than you wanted to know about baylor]

edit: we've had the 3rd and 4th largest crowds in our history this year already, barring a major collapse, the A&M and UT games later this season should be right up there if not higher. Had aggy whining about how many people we brought to reed. Look for just as strong of a presence in austin tomorrow.
