    Question

What do you guys think of the defensive changes Mac announced yesterday? Was the changes expected? With Nebraska & Tx Tech (2 schools that like to throw the ball) looming on the schedule, why would Mac start an untested redshirt freshman at one of the safety spots?

Being a Nebraska fan, I see this change and I smell blood ;)

Jon Banks is being moved from starting free safety to Adam Carper’s backup at strongside linebacker. Redshirt freshman Steve Johnson is the new starter at free safety. Make that little-used redshirt freshman Steve Johnson.

As for Johnson, he’s pretty much an unknown. He has yet to make a tackle (Banks is third on the team in tackles). According to ISU’s participation charts, Johnson hasn’t played since the opener against Toledo. Teammates say Johnson will be just fine, but that’s what you’d expect them to say.

    Re: Question

The way I see it is it's way to get another DB on the field I think they will be running a 3-3-5 or a 3-4 with Banks being the 4th linebacker. This way since the DL is not getting any pressure they can start blitzing out of this D with their LB's and DB's. It is something that will counter the schools that like to throw the ball around.

I agree. It's partly because of performance and it's partly a change in defensive scheme in order to handle for the passing attacks we're soon to face.

Either way, the ISU defense has a major deficiency in pass coverage and the coaches are making a change to attempt to rectify it.

    Re: Question

Can anything be worse than what we've been putting out there? Sometimes a simple change will bring some life back into a squad, and our secondary needs a boost. Perhaps this will motivate Banks, and he'll have a heck of a game..
